Lola Haden McDaniel
What you keep, you lose.
What you give away, you keep.
And when you leave, you take with you,
only what you have given
away.
As reported by Lola Haden
McDaniel, she was born December 28, 1910 in Harris County,
Tx. , on Cedar Bayou, at her grandparent's farm. Lola Anne
Haden McDaniel lived her life believing that an education
and "giving back" were important attributes
to her legacy. Lola Haden McDaniel and her late
husband, Moran K. McDaniel
funded The McDaniel Charitable Foundation in 1997.
The McDaniel Charitable Foundation has supported Galveston
County and beyond in
scholarships, research and community projects.
Lola Haden McDaniel felt much endearment toward Galveston
County because much of the McDaniel's success and prosperity
was related to the support they received from the people of
this community. The theatre business they started survived
the hardship of wars, natural disasters and difficult
economic times.
Lola Anne Haden McDaniel
attended grade school
in Texas City at Wolverine School. She was also a
graduate of Kidd-Key High School and Jr. College, Sherman,
Tx. with a degree in Music and Voice. Lola transferred to

John Howland, who sailed in 1620 from England to North
America aboard the Mayflower

Howland helped establish Plymouth Colony.
Mrs. McDaniel was a member of
the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), she served
as Regent of the George Washington Chapter in Galveston, Tx.
Her ancestor, Daniel McKinney, fought under the command of
George Washington. Daniel McKinney dressed like an
Indian and emptied tea into Boston Harbor this act of
defiance was one of many that led to the American
Revolution.
She was also a member of the Daughters of the Republic of
Texas (DRT) as a descendant of Collin McKinney who signed
the Declaration of Independence. Collin County and the town
of McKinney, Tx. were named in his honor. Mrs. McDaniel
served in the Sidney Sherman Chapter of the DRT as President
twice and was also a state Vice President. Lola has been an
avid supporter of "the Cradle" in Galveston, Tx. and was
presented with the prestigious Blue Bonnet pins and a
"Yellow Rose of Texas Award" by Governor Rick Perry.
Lola was a member of the Texas Historical Survey Committee
were she was responsible for obtaining and maintaining
historical artifacts related to Galveston island. She also
researched historical churches in Galveston and was
responsible for the information noted on plaques and
markers.
Lola Haden McDaniel was a charter member of the Junior
League of Galveston County and served as a sustaining
President. Through the Junior League, she and fellow members
organized a library and she worked as a librarian. She
collected and catalogued books and periodicals and also
managed the lending libraries in the main building of John
Sealy Hospital. She and other Junior League members
volunteered literary services to Dr. Titus Harris' private
psychiatric hospital and the Texas Hospital for the Mentally
Ill.
In 1953, in the kitchen of
the McDaniel home in La Marque, Tx., the petition to
incorporate the City of La Marque, Tx. was proposed and
signed by Grafton Austin, Jr., Bud Earle and Moran K.
McDaniel and then delivered to the Galveston County Judge.
Lola and others were instrumental in the development of the
La Marque Public Library.
Lola Haden Mc Daniel is a member of the United Methodist
Church in La Marque. The first services that the church held
were in the Lamar Theatre, the first theatre that Moran K.
and Lola McDaniel owned. Later, after the war the Mc Daniels
opened the Bayou Drive In and the 1970's ventured into the
cable business.
Mrs. McDaniel served on the
Board of Directors of the Galveston Museum and donated the
building that the J.C. Penney Co. occupied on 6th Street to
the "Mainland
Museum" in Texas City. The museum is now the "Texas City
Museum" owned by the City of Texas City and dedicated to
preserving the unique history related to Texas City.
Lola enjoyed traveling to every state in the United States
as well as abroad. She journeyed to Europe, China, Hong
Kong, and Algeria in Africa. She was a guest in 41 foreign
countries, her favorites being England, Italy and Mexico.

Lou Cille Scoggins
Lou Cille Scoggins, a 4th
generation Texan born in Waco on June 27, 1919 has died.
On August 17, 2010 she departed this world with an
abiding faith in Jesus Christ which was instilled early
by her parents, Clyde and Lucille (Dedek) Crump. She was
educated at Sacred Heart Academy and graduated in 1936.
That summer, while on holiday with family in Galveston,
she met her future husband, a young lawyer and volunteer
lifeguard. She married Scott Scoggins the following year
and they enjoyed 42 vivid years together until his death
in 1979.
She took up tennis in her teens and became a highly
ranked player in the 1940's and 50's, all the while
giving back to the sport she loved by coaching free
clinics for Galveston youths at Menard Park. All were
welcomed and those less fortunate were provided racquets
and sneakers by Lou Cille. In 2006, the city of
Galveston honored her in a ceremony naming the Menard
Park Courts the "SCOGGINS - STIGLICH TENNIS CENTER."
2002 saw her inducted into the Texas Tennis Coaches Hall
of Fame, and in 2007, she earned the national ranking of
# 1 in the USA in the Senior Womens Tennis Assn.
In 2005, she was chosen to represent the US at the
Friendship Cup in Austria. She and her partner won the
European Ladies Doubles that same summer.
Having married young, she did not enter college until
her only child began first grade. Lou Cille was
valedictorian of her under graduate class before going
on to earn her law degree at Bates School of Law at
University of Houston. She began teaching government at
Dickinson High School in 1969 while attending law school
at night. She loved teaching and inspiring a curiosity
to learn in her students. She was known for her wit and
style and she loved to laugh. She began coaching the
tennis team there, and in 2009, the DISD honored her by
naming the new tennis center after her and fellow coach
Sandy McDonald.
She took great joy in traveling to exotic destinations
with her daughter, she loved gardening, sudoku,
crosswords, was an accomplished calligrapher, and a
photo-realist painter. She loved animals and any
stray quickly became family. Her spontaneity and way
with words were known to all and tough to rival.
The day before her death, she learned that she was to be
placed in the DHS Athletic Hall of Fame, which brought a
big smile to her tired but beautiful face. She
experienced great hardships, the loss of her home on the
bayou by fire and the loss of her husband to a stroke
that left him paralyzed and aphasic, but she handled
tragedy and triumph with equal grace. She is survived by
her daughter, actress Tracy Scoggins.
A Memorial Mass will be held at the Shrine of the True
Cross Church in Dickinson on Saturday, August 28, at 9
am by Father Paul Felix with interment at Mt Olivet
Cemetery to follow and a reception back at the Church.
Please visit the Crowder Funeral Home website at

Wayne Travis
Evans
Wayne Travis Evans 53, passed away
August 17, 2010 at his residence in
Texas City in the arms of his best
friend, Jerry Stripling, after a valiant but failed attempt
at CPR. Wayne died as a result of heart damage from
years of Type I diabetes.
Mr. Evans was a local building
contractor and an accomplished songwriter and guitarist.
In smaller circles, he was better known as a comic: Wayne was great at writing and telling jokes.
Moreover, he was a master craftsman at telling stories and
having them come to life; his stories and imitations would
leave listeners with tears of laughter.
For the precious few who knew how
funny Wayne could be, the world
is now a sadder, darker place, for his scene of humor added
comedy to everyday calamities and truly brighten our lives.
Wayne
was born in Raleigh, NC in 1956. He is preceded in death by
his mother, Elizabeth Stokes Freibert; his father, Richard
Travis Evans; his step-father, Thomas Harold Freibert; and
his sister Cynthia Cay Bittner. Wayne is survived by
his loving wife Lisa Jo Evans; daughter, Brook Evans;
step-daughter Jodie Lee Wheeler & her husband, Jason;
brother, Morris Rudolf Luciani; and grandchildren: Jordan,
Violet, Dilyn, & Cade. Wayne is also survived by
his loving cousin, Pat; many other members of a large
extended family. This account would be incomplete
without mentioning the countless loyal friendships
Wayne developed
through his work; travels; fishing & camping trips; AA
membership; playing with the band,
Bloodshot Annie; and helping others. He
will be very deeply missed.
Services will be held at James Crowder
Funeral Home in
La Marque, TX,
beginning at 6:00 PM with visitation from 2:00 to 6:00 PM on
Monday, August 23, 2010 – just three days before Wayne would have celebrated his 54th
birthday. Per his request, Mr. Evans’ remains will be
cremated; hence, no interment is scheduled.
