Samuel Eugene Sullivan, Jr.

Samuel Eugene Sullivan, Jr., (Gene) of League City, Texas passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at the age of 82.  Born on March 13, 1938 in Brainerd, Minnesota to Samuel Eugene Sr. and Ruth Dewberry Sullivan, he was the youngest of three children raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended John Carroll Catholic High School and The University of Alabama. At UA he joined the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity (FiJi).

Gene was a mechanical engineer and after his military career was hired by Union Carbide, beginning his career in Huntsville, Alabama (US Rocket City). He was later transferred to Florida where he raised his children in Titusville (Space Coast), until moving to Houston, Texas (Space City), settling in Nassau Bay. After more than 30 years with Union Carbide, he retired. Shortly after retirement he was persuaded to return to corporate life where he continued work in Houston and Baton Rouge, Louisiana before permanently retiring to Destin, Florida. In Destin he enjoyed the company of his oldest sister Mary (Bill), and his nieces, nephews and their families. His middle sister, Marge (Jim) and her family frequently visited him there. Not one to stay idle, he filled his time as a board member and then president of his condo’s association. In 2009, he returned to Texas moving to League City. He spent the rest of his years devoted to caring for his wife Karen as she battled Alzheimer until she passed on December 23, 2019. Over the course of 2020 he was enjoying time with his children, their families, and working around his home.  Gene is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Mary Wright (Destin, FL), Margery LaMar (Marge), Port Tobacco, Maryland and his wife of nearly 30 years, Karen.

He is survived by his children Betty Melby (Scott), Sam Sullivan (Kim Frahm) and his grandchildren: Taylor Melby Colwell (John), Travis Melby, Kinzie Sullivan, Aaron Frahm, nieces and nephews: Sandi LaMar Koehler (Dave), Gini LaMar Webster (Ed), Dan Wright (Cheryl), Peter Wright (Beth), Susan Wright Kiefer, and loyal Phi Gamm brothers.

The Family will receive friends on Monday, November 30, 2020 from 10-12:00PM at Crowder Funeral Home, 1645 East Main, League City, Texas 77573.  A grave side ceremony will follow on Monday at 2:15PM at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77038.  In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution to the Alzheimer Foundation of America, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation/Wright Fight, Phi Gamma Delta Foundation, or a charity of your choice.

  1. He was a fun and wonderful neighbor living next to me,,, fishing was fun Sam and Betty were growing up, he always had a funny comment about my behavior. We had spoken lately about hanging out, but Jesus took him too soon. Love is what I have for this man and will continue to speak of him in the best regards… a giant of good will and a wonderful sense of humor… God Speed my buddy…you will not be forgotten
