Michael John Davis

Michael John Davis of Bacliff, Texas, passed away in the early morning hours of December 18, 2017. Mike was born August 30, 1946, in Galveston, Texas, to Ford Odell Davis and Joan Dwyer Davis. He was the first male born in 23 years to the large Dwyer family, which made his christening day an unforgettable event.

Mike attended Kirwin High School in Galveston and Galveston College. He served his country in the US Navy as a Nuclear Weapons Specialist on a submarine. After his service, he worked as a union carpenter and a union millwright as a member of Millwrights Local Union 2232.

Mike loved history, especially Galveston history. He was a researcher and a historian and was a member of the Historical Foundation. His affection for the area’s history lead him to take part in reenactments of local Civil War battles. His days in the US Navy gave him an avid interest in maritime history, as well, and he used his diving skills to discover historic coastal shipwrecks.

He spent his retirement years researching the history of local whiskey runners, the blockades, and the slave trade. He was invited to speak to many groups who were interested in his findings, and he had begun to write a book based on his research. Sadly, it was incomplete upon his passing.

Mike had a quick wit and was never at a loss for words. He was generous with his jokes and loved to make those around him laugh. His heart was kind and caring, and he had many good friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Patrick James and Donald  Wayne Davis. He is survived by his aunt, Francis Dwyer Johnston of Crockett, Texas, his uncle, Raymond Davis of Irving, Texas, his uncle by marriage, William Kelly of Houston, Texas, his honorary son, Daniel Durdin and his family of San Antonio, Texas, and many cousins and long- time friends.

There is a visitation in his honor 6:00 – 8:00 pm, Friday, January 5, 2018, with funeral services 10:00 am, Saturday, January 6, 2018 both , t Crowder Funeral Home, Dickinson.  Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Dickinson.
