Douglas Bump

Douglas Edwin Bump, 68, passed away on March 27, 2020 in Manvel, Texas. He was born on April 29, 1951 in San Antonio, Texas to Delmar Eugene Bump and Elora Jane Leach Bump. Doug is survived by: wife, Wrenlon McCaskill Bump; children, Marcie Merinda Belfi (husband, Chris) and Timothy Everett Bump; grandchildren, Robin Elora Reese Belfi, Tegan Merinda Fleur Belfi; and numerous family members and friends. They are all extremely blessed to be related to such a Godly man.

Doug earned a B.S. in Elementary Education from Baptist Bible College, a B.S. in Mathematics from North Texas State University, a B.S. in Physics from Lamar University, a M.Ed. in Educational Technology from Texas A&M University, and an Ed.D. in Mathematics Education from the University of Houston. He taught at Temple Christian School in Baton Rouge for 8 years and at Houston Community College for over two decades. His two great loves – after God, missions, and his family – were math and music. Throughout the years he taught many children and adults to play the guitar. He loved to lead sing alongs – at home, at church, at nursing homes, and with children’s groups. He was the worship leader at Mosaic Christian Fellowship in Alvin, Texas. Doug also loved to teach and tutor in math. He was a wonderful resource for career advice and help. He was a mentor to everyone he worked with.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Doug’s name can do so online at https://mosaicalvin.org under the Online Giving link. The description for the donations should be Prison Ministries. A memorial will be held later this year.

A song that describes Doug’s life is Thank You For Giving To The Lord
By Ray Boltz
I dreamed I went to heaven. You were there with me. We walked along the streets of gold beside the crystal sea. We heard the angels singing, then someone called your name. You turned and saw a young man. He was smiling as he came.
He said friend, you may not know me now, but then he said but wait. You used to teach my Sunday school when I was only eight. Every week you would say a prayer, before the class would start. One morning when you said that prayer, I asked Jesus in my heart.
Thank you for giving to the Lord. I am a life that was changed
Thank you for giving to the Lord. I am so glad you gave.

Then another man stood before you and said remember the time a missionary came to your church; his pictures made you cry. You didn’t have much money but you gave it anyway. Jesus took the gift you gave and that’s why I’m here today.
Thank you for giving to the Lord. I am a life that was changed.
Thank you for giving to the Lord. I am so glad you gave.

One by one they came, as far as the eye could see. Each one somehow touched by your generosity. Little things that you had done, sacrifices made, unnoticed on the earth, heaven now proclaims. And I know up in heaven that you’re not supposed to cry, but I was almost sure there were tears in your eyes, as Jesus took your hand and you stood before the Lord and He said my child look around you for great is your reward
Thank you for giving to the Lord. I am a life that was changed.
Thank you for giving to the Lord. I am so glad you gave.

    • Dr. Bump had a profound impact on me (in my short time working at HCC as a new faculty adjunct in Dev Math). We gravitated to the same classes for break outs and always for some reason I would end up in his break out learning sessions. I enjoyed his commitment to answering questions, clarifying information, always for helpful, giving us so many great resources and his infectious hyper energy like me. I loved him and was always happy to see him during meetings and new him to be the most positive man. I have and will continue to keep your family and loved ones in my prayers and as Christian his spirit has moved on to rest in peace where there is no suffering or pain. God bless your family!!

  20. First off I want to send my condolences to Professor Bumps wife and his family. I’m am sorry for your loss.
Professor Bump is the best Math teacher a student could have. He taught the material well and would let the students how much he cared about us and it showed. I enjoyed listening to his stories of his personal experience with his math teachers and his college experience. He would always talk about how smart his wife is during his lessons. His words “She is so smart man, gosh”. He shared many great stories of his family. Professor Bump I will never forget all that you taught me especially the “Bump Method”. You will be missed and shall never be forgotten.
    Amen Brother Bump.
    Your student,
    Vanessa G.

  22. I am shocked and deeply saddened by Doug’s passing, as I know that anyone who knew him would be. “Scotty” as his mother called him, was as sweet and delightful as any person could possibly be. I remember when we played together as kids that he was always joyful and so full of love and happiness. There were never any arguments or contests, just a lot of laughter and fun. Doug didn’t just see the best in everyone, he brought it out, sometimes with just his sweet smile. The line of lives he changed must be near endless.
Deepest condolences, love and best wishes to Wren and her family. May God bless and comfort you, and know that we’ll all see him again some day.

  23. Doug will be forever missed and remembered for his devotion to the Lord and for his love of teaching. He was as genuine a person as you could ever meet, and I will miss his wit and humor as well as his guitar playing and singing. I loved getting into deep philosophical and questions of faith with him. His love for the Bible and God’s Word is something that I will always remember and take with me. Especially in questioning what a verse really means. He loved his family and especially his children and grandchildren. His face always lit up when they were around, and he loved singing with children. I look forward to singing with him in Heaven one day and maybe he will be strumming a guitar at the same time. Until we meet again in His presence may God continue to work through your influence and memory.

  24. Dr. Bump is how I knew him. He was my math professor at H.C.C and was absolutely my favorite teacher. I would always stay after class and we would talk about different career paths that would suit me and he was always extremely helpful on anything anyone needed. Even years after teaching at his church he would cherish the moments and would talk about them so fondly and how he loved hearing “AMEN BOTHER BUMP!” And watching his face light up. You could see HIM light up teaching math and answering any and all questions we had. My condolences and prayers to his family and loved ones he truly was the best teacher you could ever have and he really helped inspire me work hard on my dreams. Thank you for everything Dr. Bump <3

Thank you for sharing your husband and father with the students at HCC. The world was a better and marvelous place because he was in it.

  46. Dear Wren, Tim, and Marcie,
Douglas and I met many years ago, even before he came to HCC. He was a mentor in many ways. As others have mentioned, he had a passion: for teaching, for the Lord, for Mathematics, and for videos. Through the magic of the internet, his passion will be around for many years to come. may be gone from sight but never out of our hearts. The world was a better place with him in it. He will be missed.

  61. Dear Wren,

You and your talented husband were only with us for a short time, but I praise God for that time. You were such a blessing in a number of ways, but the first thing that comes to mind is working with you in Music Makers at Bay Area First Baptist Church.

I’m praying for you and your family, knowing that you miss him so much, even while rejoicing that he is safe in the presence of our Lord.

    Kathy Carlblom
  62. Wren, You know how much Douglas loved and honored you, but I still want to tell you that when he spoke about you the love was obvious in his eyes, in his tone of voice, and in his face. He loved Marci and Tim deeply and with pride.
Douglas was a colleague who grew to be a friend; a cherished friend. When we were “cubicle mates,” I watched and was fascinated as he created videos that helped his students, HCC Nursing students at Coleman College, and then students everywhere. We will never really know how many lives he touched and changed with his innovations and his belief that the blessings of his intelligence came from God, from his Lord. Douglas believed that was a gift and because it was given to him, he had a mission, was commissioned to use it to help others. He wanted to help all students; especially students who thought they couldn’t learn Math. He showed them they could, showed them how to learn Math. Among those he helped was one of my sisters, who said she loved him and he was the best teacher she ever had. Douglas received Grace, and gave Grace. He always had something good to say about everyone, and his love for the Lord, his intelligent mind, his life lived with purpose gave him courage, wisdom, and strength to do the right thing, and contributed to his greatness. I join my friends and colleagues at HCC in celebrating my friend, Douglas Bump, who I grew to know, love and respect. My prayers and thoughts are with you and the children. Pauline Warren

  79. My sincere condolences to Mrs. Bump and family / friends. I was one of Mr.Bump’s students at Temple Christian. He pushed me to study math, physics, and chemistry. He loved teaching and his enthusiasm was contagious. I just found out about Mr Bump passing today and I am heartbroken. I was in Houston and wanted to reach out to him to say hello and let him know the hours he spent on me were not in vain. I’m a mechanical engineer now and in part that is due to his teachings. God bless
