Burl Perry

Burl was born on May 14, 1939 in Sulphur, Oklahoma. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California where he was very proud to serve our county as a Marine from 1956 to 1962. After leaving the Marine Corp, Burl went into the car business. His brother-in-law, Bobby Osborne, gave him his first job in the industry as a porter. So he started at the bottom working himself up the ranks to retire as Service Manager at Charlie Thomas AutoWorld. After his retirement he drove cars for delivery to and from different dealerships.
Burl loved telling stories about his life experiences, and he had many great stories to tell. He loved history, and metal detecting finding many true treasures such as civil war artifacts, coins, etc. He loved traveling in his motorhome seeing all the beautiful places across the United States. But his first true love was golf. He started at a very young age being a caddy at a Nichols Hills Country Club in Oklahoma City and played well up into his seventies with a 2 handicap. He also had a Marshalling position at Bear Creek Golf Course in Houston. After living in Houston for many years he recently moved to Kemah, Texas where he enjoyed, as he called it “poodleing,” in his “Pro Shop” and was proud of keeping the yard a lush green. It was a very peaceful time and place for him.
Burl was preceded in death by: his father, D.J. Perry; his mother, Murry Corman; a brother, Dan Perry; a sister, Jane Osborne; and his first wife, Sandra Taulbee Perry.
He is survived by his: wife, Melinda of Kemah, Texas; and two stepsons, Ronnie Goyne of Houston and Mark Goyne of Virginia; his son, Burl Jr and wife Margie from Friendswood, Texas; grandson, Mitchell and wife, Erin; and two great grandsons; granddaughter, Serena, her husband, Kevin; and two great grandsons. He had three daughters, Billie Jo Chandler of Humble, Texas; grandson, Perry; granddaughter, Rachael Hendrix, her husband, Stephen; Leanne Benner and her husband, Cameron of Houston, Texas; and grandson Jordan Potts; Joy Johnston and her husband, John of Pearland, Texas; and grandson, Jacob; and his youngest sister, Lynn Willis from Spring Branch (San Antonio) Texas. Burl also leaves behind a wonderful group of nieces, nephews and special friends of many years.
Memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at 12:30 p.m. at the Houston Veterans Cemetery. The address is 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038.

  2. I met Burl in 1973 on the golf course when I was 16 years old. My dad passed away when I was 15, and Burl had a big impact on my life when I was a teenager. He continued to have an impact on my life in the 48 years we were friends. He always gave me good advice. I’m a better person because of my relationship with him, and I’m going to miss him.

  5. I meant Burl back in the nineties when he worked as a shop foreman for Charlie Thomas. Back in the day, we golfed and then did a lot of treasure hunting while Houston was being rehabilitated. We always made golf or treasure hunting a competitive sport. Competition made the event fun. We were always trying to one up each other particularly in treasure hunting. Burl was a great golfer. Not many could keep up with him on golf course. I couldn’t come close to even tie with Burl’s average score.
Several years ago, we did a vacation trip to Alaska. With wives in tow, this was the best vacation for the four of us. Many good memories on the flight, lodging, train ride, and tourist ship ride.
RIP Burl. I will think of you often.
