Glen Rose Allen Thomas
November 15, 1937 – June 8, 2026

Glen Rose Allen Thomas of Friendswood, TX, was born November 15, 1937, in Crowley, LA, to parents, Blaze Allen Sr., and Mable Pete Allen. Glen was the second of 10 children. At an early age, she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church and Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church. She attended school in Acadia Parish and took immense pride in her mathematical skills, advancing to a Louisiana State Championship.

After high school, Glen married Melvin Thomas, Sr., who enlisted in the U.S. Army, and they relocated to Waco, Texas. While in Waco, their first son, Melvin Thomas, Jr., was born. Also, to this union, a daughter, Vanessa Thomas was born in Fort Riley, Kansas. After returning to Louisiana, Glen’s “baby boy” Gregory Thomas was born in Lafayette, LA.

Glen and her family left Louisiana and moved to Beaumont, Texas in the mid-1960’s. There, she built a wonderful life for herself and her children. Her professional journey began as a *tailor specializing in alterations and fittings where she developed expertise in garment alterations, precision fitting, attention to detail, and customer service.

She’d dare you to call her a seamstress! She trained several up-and-coming “seamstresses” in the Beaumont area. Her reputation as a talented tailor extended throughout Beaumont, where she had the privilege of designing and sewing for many of the city’s most prominent and influential residents. She also designed and created clothing for her high school age children whose outfits earned recognition and Best Dressed Honors.

Glen worked for the iconic family-owned upscale clothing store Butch Hoffer’s for nearly 40 years. She built a strong relationship with the owner, Lewis Hoffer, and co-worker, Cynthia Fontenot, a lifelong friend, whom she considered a sister. She was also a talented cook and baker, renowned for her homemade treats, especially her peanut brittle and caramel popcorn.

Her family eagerly anticipated her arrival at family gatherings, knowing she would bring the beloved specialties that became a cherished part of every family celebration. Glen was a sophisticated lady, but also enjoyed fishing and crabbing with her children.

One of Glen’s most cherished traditions was a family activity she lovingly called “THE CAN”. She assigned each participant a tin can, and throughout the year, family members would mail money to her to add to their individual cans. At Thanksgiving time, everyone gathered to open their cans to count their contributions. What began as a simple savings project became a family competition and brought laughter, excitement, happiness and togetherness to all who participated.

Glen may have been up in age, but her mind was firing on all cylinders. She embraced technology with enthusiasm and kept up with the latest trends on social media, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. One of her favorite past times was playing Big Fish Casino on her iPad, which she enjoyed for countless hours. Her comfort with technology extended beyond entertainment – she navigated online shopping with ease
and confidence. Never one to shy away from new innovations, she eagerly embraced technology and all the opportunities it brought into her life.

Glen cherished spending time with her three children and grandchildren, and especially enjoyed their special dinner gatherings. They rotated hosting and planning their time together, and each gathering was filled with love, laughter, and meaningful conversations. The time she spent with her children was precious to her and remained one of the most important parts of her life!!

Glen was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Versey Allen; and brother, Kermit Allen. She is survived by her children, Melvin Thomas; Vanessa Butler (Earl); Gregory Thomas (Diane); five grandchildren, James (Tutu) Walker, Jr. (April); Christopher Thomas; Theresa Thomas; Rachel Thomas; and Terri Lynn Butler (Kevin); two great-grandchildren, James (J.D.) Walker, III; and Jayla Walker; sisters, Carol Jean Weston; Lucille Barriere;
Deola Collins; Alzena McNeil (Wilbert); Honorary sister/daughter Adrean Johnson; brothers, Leslie Allen; Blaze Allen, Jr.; and Nathan Allen (Dianne). Glen had a special place in her heart for her many nieces and nephews, and was affectionately known as “Sally” only to her niece Trina who gave her the name. She leaves behind her
beloved God-daughters/nieces, Ondranetta Barriere and Adrean Johnson. Glen was dearly loved by a large circle of relatives and friends, all of whom were blessed by her warmth, wisdom, caring spirit and quick wit.

*Glen would want you to know the definition of a Tailor. A tailor is a professional who specializes in making or altering clothing to fit an individual’s unique body shape and measurements (custom fit). Not simply hemming a pair of pants or sewing on buttons. Tailors typically work with high quality fabrics and use specialized techniques to create custom-made clothing that is tailored to each client’s specific needs and preferences. This is the reason Beaumont’s most prominent citizens selected Glen as their trusted, masterful tailor.
