Proud to be born on the island–BOI, she was a member of the Class of ’66 at Ursuline Academy and graduated from the University of Dallas in 1970 with degrees in English and Secondary Education.
On August 22, 1970, she happily married a fellow Galvestonian, Charles Frederick Prendergast, a fightin’ Texas Aggie. Huachuca, Arizona, Seoul, South Korea, Ft. Meade, Maryland, and Munich, West Germany.
Sylvia was a substitute teacher for many years in various school systems until she retired in December 1999 to help take care of the first of her three grandchildren. She enjoyed cruising the Caribbean, birdwatching, gardening, and watching her grandkids play sports and perform at concerts. After retiring from the Army in 1994, Charles and Sylvia settled in Friendswood and became members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in League City, Texas. They were active members of the Friendswood Senior Activity Center where Sylvia enjoyed Charles’ exercise class and taught line dancing classes. Sylvia’s other passion was listening to and discussing music–everything from classic rock to hair metal.

Sylvia and her Mom were the best line dancers ever! I’m sure Sylvia and her Mom are line dancing with all the angels and saints around the thrown of our Lord. We will miss you….until we meet again!!!!
I miss Sylvia so much at line dancing. She knew all the dances and all of the songs. Her memory was remarkable. She was funny and friendly and always willing to teach us. Praying for Charles and the family.
So sorry hear of Sylvia’s passing. I remember her from our neighborhood days at Ft Meade. One of the happy times was Sylvia explaining how Alice wanted to be R2D2 for Halloween and me wishing her luck. It’s the happy times and memories that are important. Love to Charles, Alice and the rest of the family.
Charlie, Margaret and I are so sorry for your loss. We remember Sylvia from our A&M days as a gracious host and companion for other Aggie girlfriends who traveled to College Station during football season. She taught them all how to be gung-ho!
So blessed to have happy Texas City summer memories with Alice and her sweet mom, Sylvia!
