1958 – 2026
Thomas Gilmore Mays, 67, affectionately known to family and friends as “Gil,” left this world unexpectedly on August 29, 2026, in Houston, Texas. Born on August 31, 1958, in Warwick, Rhode Island, he was the son of Clayton Paschal Mays and Betty Joe (Beard) Mays.
Gil leaves behind Katherine (Bouvier) Mays, his devoted wife of 40 years and partner in every joy life offered him. He is also lovingly remembered by his children, Kyle Mays (Irene), Tyler Mays (Madelyn), Ryan Mays (Olivia), and Elizabeth Gregory (William); his sisters, Carleen Forbes and Karen Dishman; his brother, Michael Mays; and his seven grandchildren, Henry, Benjamin, Daniel, Ezra, Liam, Wesley, and Jacob, who brought him boundless joy. He is survived as well by numerous other family members and friends who hold him close in memory.
A proud graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, Gil earned his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and carried that sharp, analytical mind into a long and respected career in the refining industry, most recently serving as a Strategic Refining Economic Engineer for Marathon Petroleum before his retirement.
As an adult, Gil embraced the Catholic faith, and his conversion became a wellspring of strength and quiet grace that carried him through the rest of his life. Yet above every achievement and title, it was his family that Gil loved most. He treasured every moment he spent with his wife, his children, and his grandchildren, and that love will remain his most enduring legacy.
Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m., at Crowder Funeral Home, 111 E Medical Center Blvd, Webster, Texas 77598. A viewing will resume Friday, September 4, 2026, at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m., at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 18223 Point Lookout Drive, Houston, Texas 77058. Burial will follow at 1:30pm at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 7801 Gulf Freeway, Dickinson, Texas 77539.
Gil demonstrated the soft approach of a warrior for Christ. So glad I got to know him, especially over the last 6 months.
With heartfelt sympathy, I want to extend my deepest condolences to the entire Mays family on the loss of Gil. I had the privilege of knowing him and of sharing many years and memories with many of you, which makes this loss especially close to my heart.
Gil leaves behind a beautiful legacy in his family and in all of us who were fortunate enough to know him. May God give you all strength, peace, and comfort during this difficult time, and may the wonderful memories you shared with Gil remain forever in your hearts.

Gil was a truly kind and gregarious person. He made me, and many others, feel welcomed. He will be missed. I’m sorry for y’all’s loss. May God comfort you during this season of grief.

I had the privilege of serving on Journey to Damascus (JTD) #244 this past August with Gil. He was one of my Assistant Lay Directors (ALD) and he was a joy to work with. I was shocked and heartbroken when I learned of his unexpected passing on.
He was truly a member of the Body of Christ and part of the Priesthood of all Believers. He was also just fun to hang out with. I was looking forward to serving on the next Journey weekend with Gil.
I want to offer my most heartfelt sympathies to Katherine, Tyler and all of Gil’s wonderful Mays family. Y’all are in my prayers, and I truly hurt for y’all.

Gil, he was a wonderful man. I’m going to miss him everyday. He was very kind, generous, and he was a good Grandfather. My condolences to his family and his friends. I’m sure everybody is going to miss him every day. I am certain he’s in heaven because he was such a good man.

I always loved speaking with Gil. It brought such happiness to me when I’d look over by the choir area and see the grandkids, your boys and their wives at Mass. You are gone too soon but only God has the answer. Thank you for always sending a wave my way before Mass. We continue to pray for Katherine and the entire May’s Family.
In your hands, O Lord, we humbly entrust our brothers and sisters. In this life you embraced them with your tender love; deliver them now from every evil and bid them eternal rest. The old order has passed away: welcome them into paradise, where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain, but fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen

We are going to miss Gil’s laugh more than anything. And it didn’t take much to get him going. Make ’em laugh up there, Gil! Your light may be out but never ever forgotten. We miss you already. Take care of Katherine from heaven. We know you will.
Gil and I were such good friends in high school. I am sorry to hear of his passing. My heart is breaking for his wife and family.

A special time in life was spent this past January with Gil on a Caribbean cruise. We cherish the memory of gathering in the buffet at night and eating pizza. Gil shared stories of his amazing life journey. It was such a great privilege to be in his company.
Our hearts are broken for Katherine and all the family. Gil’s legacy of faith will sustain you in Christ Jesus.

Oh this news makes my heart so sad for all of you! I loved Gil and I remember when you both came to our Sunday school class on Boundaries. I want to reconnect with you! I’m so sad I can’t make visitation or the service but I will be lifting you all in prayer. We grieve, but not as those without hope.

The world is little less shiny now but thankfully the memories are not. Our sympathies to everyone who got to experience the unique glow that was Gil Mays. And profound sympathy to Katherine and his entire family who variously shaped, kept, and expanded that glow.

Gil served on my Journey and was one of the men that helped me reconnect with my faith. I could never forget the joy and happiness he brought, the prayers he shared with our group. I have no doubt he is in Heaven with the Lord.
