Robert Paul McNamara
Robert Paul McNamara, 77, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025, in Richmond, VA. Born in Galveston, TX to Lawrence and Mary McNamara, Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a true friend to all who knew him.
Known for his generosity, hardworking spirit, and caring nature, Robert always put others first, making selflessness a cornerstone of his life. He worked in construction for his entire career, traveling the world with companies like Halliburton and KBR. One of his proudest and most difficult assignments was serving as a Project Manager for the Embassy construction project in Kabul, where he was tasked with overseeing the most complex of projects. He was renowned for his ability to transform chaotic job sites into completed projects ahead of schedule and under budget—a trait that earned him many project completion awards and the respect of his clients. Robert was also deeply proud of his work in Morocco, where he rebuilt NASA’s landing strip—the first emergency landing strip after leaving the launchpad at Cape Canaveral.
Robert’s career took him to numerous exciting locations, including Tokyo, which he considered the best job experience of his life, and offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, where he had the thrilling experience of tying up to oil rigs and hauling in red snapper. He was also part of the first group of boots on the ground during Desert Storm, helping Kuwait rebuild after the war ended.
Though he received numerous accolades and recognition throughout his career, Robert never sought attention or praise. He showed his true character through his actions, not his words.
Outside of work, Robert had a passion for woodworking, creating beautiful furniture that he often sold at the local consignment shop. He was an avid coin collector and enjoyed spending time playing games like Scrabble, Monopoly, and Uno with his loved ones. His love of football and baseball, particularly the Houston Astros, was a constant source of joy for him, and he could often be found cheering on his favorite teams.
Robert was known for his quiet, gentle nature—a gentle giant. He exuded confidence, and his intuition was always accurate. He loved people, and was loved by everyone who knew him. His family fondly remembers how he taught by example, instilling the values of listening to others, patience, sincerity, and the importance of being slow to anger. His beliefs in family, determination, perseverance, trustworthiness, inner strength, and endurance shaped the lives of those around him.
Robert loved the outdoors, especially hunting in the Texas Hill Country, particularly in Bandera County. After moving to Virginia, however, he developed a new favorite pastime—watching deer play in open fields. He had a passion for deep sea fishing; his ashes will be scattered in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida, where the real fish are.
Preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Mary McNamara; his brother, James McNamara; and his son, Robert D. McNamara.
Robert leaves behind his wife, Cynthia McNamara; daughters, Natalie McNamara and Alicia Maldonado (Michael); brother Larry McNamara, grandchildren: Robert Zachary McNamara, Macy Franzese (Bryan), Julia Jackson, Gage McNamara, Preston Toalson, William Toalson, and Jordan Alicia McNamara; and great-grandchildren, Brody and Luke Franzese.
A service will be held on June 10, 2025, at Crowder Funeral Home, 1645 East Main Street, League City, TX 77573, with family and friends invited to gather from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM, followed by the service at 5:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association, in honor of Robert’s lifelong spirit of giving.
My heart goes out to all of us. We lost an incredible soul. His obituary tells it all. I’m remembering all the fun times we had with our family growing up together , even though he was eight years younger. Paul will always be top in my book. I’m sure he has already hooked up with his Uncle Robert (my dad). Linda McNamara Polivka Wilson.
With heartfelt caring and blessings to all of you during this sad time.
Robb will be missed by his loving family and friends. He was a kind man.
