Joy Loraine Smith

Joy Loraine Smith, born August 29, 1946, and longtime resident of Alvin, Texas passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on October 25, 2023, in Kerrville, Texas following a short illness.

Joy was preceded in death by her parents, Edd and Thelma Henry; brother, Edd Henry Jr.; nephew Jason DeVasier, and the love of her life and husband, Don Smith. She is survived by her sisters, Phyllis Henry Fortune and Patsey DeVasier-Cox; son, Leonard Groce and wife Erin, stepdaughters Tina D’Astoli and husband Gene, and Sharla Pointer and husband Johnny; nephews, Brian DeVasier, Mark Fortune and wife Kathleen Christie,  and niece, Amy Fortune Perry and husband Richard.

A doting grandmother to her grandchildren, Everett Groce, Amber Rodgers-Mendez and husband Jeff, Michael D’Astoli, Avery D’Astoli, Jazlyn Pointer, Kylee Pointer, and Jace Pointer, and great-grandchildren Caleb Mendez, Roman Rodgers, and Valentina Rodgers, Joy was affectionately known as Granny.

Joy enjoyed a career in banking, but in her off-time is when she was able to enjoy her passions. She volunteered and sat on several rodeo committees for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for over 20 years. You could also find her on the sidelines or in the audience cheering on her grandchildren at various events or playing bingo or riding her bicycle with her friends in her cottage community. But for anyone that knew Joy knew that during baseball season, you’d find her watching the Astros and keeping up with player stats, as she never missed a game.

A memorial for Joy is being held on December 2, 2023 from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. at Crowder Funeral Home in League City, Texas.
