John Martin Smith

John Martin Smith passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 in League City, TX at the age of 60.

He was born on December 8, 1958 in Pasadena, TX to Harvey David Smith and Frances Cary Still.

John worked for NRG for 30+ years as an operator. He was a volunteer fireman for Pasadena, TX for 9 years and for Deer Park, TX for 2 years. He was a loving father and husband.

John had a passion for music, and loved sharing that with everyone he knew. He made friends everywhere he went and enjoyed making silly jokes just to make others laugh. He took pride in his job as an operator and worked hard supporting his family. He loved being involved in his kid’s activities and even coached a few of their teams. He was a die hard Houston Astros and Texans fan. He was always the first one to lend a hand to a friend or stranger, and was a great tipper. Being at the beach with his family, throwing frisbee (he was a pro, so he thought) and cooking on the grill, were a few of his favorite things to do. He also enjoyed road trips on his Harley. He loved his hats, in particular his fedoras and cowboy hats. He always liked to keep up with the latest fashions and ALWAYS had some type of strong “expensive” cologne on. He loved teaching his grand-kids new things and sharing old stories with them. He loved his family with everything he had and gave the best big bear hugs. We will miss him dearly.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, David Derrick and second wife, Julie Smith.  He is survived by Teresa Smith, the love of his life, sister, Trina C. Smith, Children, Terra M. Winkle and husband Joel, Jeremy M. Smith and wife Michelle, and Tori Smith. His 6 Grandchildren, Tessa Winkle, Jordan Smith, Tayleigh Bennett, Brantley Bennett, Lexi Smith and Ashtyn Smith.

  1. This is my baby brother. We shared so much love and life during our 60 years together. I love him more than life. We were always close, past couple years, not as much together. But one phone call like took of that. We had a hard childhood, but we had each other, which was enough to get us through. I will miss him always, waiting for his call. Rest Easy, John My little Brother.

    • Trina,
I always enjoyed talking with John. We bonded over a wide variety of topics. We seemed to have more than a few parallel paths in our lives. He was always attentive and not shy about giving or receiving advice. I will miss those chats. You have my sincere condolences.

  3. John, What a surprise to get this notification! We talked a LOT when you were at Bertron and here. We drifted back to the rides we rode, bikes we had and the simple joy of the sound of the pipes on a bike, family laughter and stories of growing up. I wish you peace, brother.
