John (Jack) Mapes

John (Jack) Mapes passed away on Monday, September 25, 2017 surrounded by family at 83 years old. Jack was born on March 15, 1934 in Jackson, Ohio to Orville and Garnet Mapes, and was the youngest of five.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Marlin, sisters Gareldine, Glennna, and Phyllis and his granddaughter Simeonette.
Jack is survived by his wife of 64 years, Norma, his daughter Vickie (husband Kert DesPrez), and his son John Jr. (wife Theresa Mapes), his grandchildren: Ariana Atler-Derr, Jessika Smith, Justin Wooldridge, Bianca Thomas, John Mapes III, Jackie Wooldridge, Betsy Baney, and Ginger Melien, and Great-Grandchildren: Connor, Courtney, Brianna, Trenton, Avery, Carter, Brinley, and Maddie.

Jack served in the United States Air Force for 21 years where he was awarded the Air Force Airman’s Medal of Honor. Later in life he retired as a Fire Chief. Those who were close to Jack knew he had a passion for life and serving God. As the pastor of his church, Jack had a profound affect on many lives, officiating weddings, baptizing new believers, and counseling those in need. He always carried gum in his pocket to give children at Church and gave Pins out to everyone he met. His infectious smile and jolly personality would light up a room. Jack also served as a Mason for over 50 years to the York Rite Shriners Organization.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2017 from 5-7pm with a service from 7-8pm at Crowder Funeral Home: 851 FM 517 Rd W, Dickinson, TX 77539. A funeral service and burial with full military honors will be held on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 1:15pm at Houston National Cemetery: 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038.

    Dianne and I want to pass on our sincere condolences on the loss of Jack. He was special to us and his passing will leave lasting memories for us here in Alamogordo. Wish we had known of his passing sooner so could have attended the services in Texas.
