John J. O’Neill Jr.

John J. O’Neill Jr. left this earth on May 17, 2021 after a year of battling cancer.  Over his almost 73 years, he was a man of high moral character who believed in working hard, doing the right thing, and staying true to your word.  He never met a car, appliance, or electronic device he could not tame.  He could fix everything.  Sadly, the body is not something that one can just fix.

He was born in New York, raised in California, and thrived in Texas.  His legacy continues in the spirit of the surviving members of his family:  John J. O’Neill III, Wendy Louise O’Neill, and granddaughter Emily Ann O’Neill, Colleen Noel Harvison and Jody Harvison, and granddaughters Lily Grace Harvison and Shelby Lee Harvison, Ryan William O’Neill, and grandson William Gage O’Neill.

He was raised in a large family in the suburbs of San Francisco.  He was preceded in death by his younger brothers, Patrick, Billy, and Larry O’Neill.  We can only imagine what they are talking about right now.  Perhaps they are riding motorcycles, drinking a few beers, and telling war stories about their youth.

To his family in California, he was known as Jackie or Jack.  He is survived by his brother Mike O’Neill, sister Maureen O’Neill, and sister-in-law Charlotte O’Neill.  He had a third family that was very special to him.  He dedicated 30 years of his life to Exxon and the Baytown refinery.  He loved his work and the people he worked with.  He drove from Clear Lake to Baytown every day and never complained once.  He started his career at Exxon driving forklifts and finished as a cherished leader.  He loved watching and cheering for his grandchildren when they played sports.  He was often called “Softball Grandpa.”  He always had a bag of Dum-Dums with him.

The family will not have a formal memorial at this time.  The family has a plan to spread his ashes in two locations during trips over the summer.  He is probably fixing something in heaven right now and telling jokes with his brothers.  We will miss Dad, John, JJ, Jack, and Softball Grandpa.
