James “Jim” Hartley

James “Jim” Hartley passed away in Galveston, TX on December 22, 2018 at the age of 67. Jim is survived by his wife Nancy, daughter Lynn, son Adam and his wife Sarah, brother John and grandchildren James, Noah and Rya.  He is preceded in death by his parents, C.S. and Tootie and his brother Robert. Jim was born on May 22, 1951 in Springfield, Illinois to C.S. and Tootie Hartley. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1969, where he played varsity football. His love of aviation drove him to earn his private pilot license at the age of 16, while working at the Springfield Capital Airport. He graduated from Western Illinois University, where he met the love of his life, Nancy. They married on June 23, 1973 and moved to League City, TX to start their life together.  This year they celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. Jim spent his career in finance in a variety of industries, with expertise in heavy equipment and bulk materials.  He was also editor-in-chief of America’s Flyways, a magazine dedicated to general aviation. His passions included aviation, writing and photography. In retirement he was a docent at the 1940 Air Terminal Museum at Hobby Airport. Most of all, he loved spending time talking with family and friends. A memorial is scheduled at Pearland Regional Airport 17622 Airfield Ln. Pearland, TX 77581 on Sat. Jan. 5, 2019 at 1pm.  All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jim’s life. Donations in his honor can be made to the American Cancer Society or the 1940 Air Terminal Museum, Hobby Airport.

  7. I’m sad as I read about Jim’s passing, but so happy I got to know him and have him as a brother-in-law. I Enjoyed his sense of humor and all the comical anecdotes he would relate in storyteller fashion that made everyone laugh. I will miss him very much. Thinking of you Nancy, Lynn and Adam and I hope you find comfort in knowing how much Jim was loved and how many people he touched in his life.
