Howell Osborne Archard, Jr.

Howell Osborne Archard, Jr., of Houston, TX and Honesdale, PA died peacefully at his Texas home on January 30, 2020. Born March 25, 1929 in Yonkers, NY, he was 90 years old.
Dr. Archard spent most of his youth in Oradell, NJ. He received a BS in Biology from Rutgers University in 1951 and a DDS from Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery in 1955, and he continued his education with specialty training as an oral pathologist. He began his career in the U.S. Public Health Service at the first dental clinic in Point Barrow, Alaska, then continued in research at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, the National Institutes of Health, and the University of Alabama in Birmingham, retiring as a Dental Director. Subsequently, he became a professor or Oral Pathology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he retired again as Professor Emeritus.
“Howie”, as he was known to family and friends, was a life-long learner whose interests spanned reading, gardening, cooking, history, politics, and investing. He loved the beach and had fond childhood memories of his parents’ beach house in Quonochontaug, RI. A true American patriot, Howie was particularly proud of his public service heritage and that of his family. This included the service of his uncle, a master mariner who ascended to Captain in the U.S. Lines and Coast Guard, and that of his grandson, currently serving on his first deployment as an Ensign in the Navy.
He is survived by several relatives, including his wife, Nellie Joan Archard; daughter, Karen Rae Armstrong; son-in-law, Charles Holly Armstrong; granddaughter, Victoria Leigh Armstrong; grandson, Nicholas Alexander Armstrong; niece, Mary Lou Mesmer Holmes; and nephew, Richard James Lamkie.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Rachel Richmond Archard; his father, Howell Osborne Archard, Sr.; his sister, Alice Huckel Mesmer, and his uncle, Edward Allen Richmond.
Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, 799 Washington Street, PO Box 807, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425-0807.
