    • Dr. Aung,

“To the world, you may be just a teacher but to your students you are a hero.” I can remember my time during my undergrad in 2002 & 2003 and by far your kindness, positive energy, and deep insight made the world a better place. I was lucky enough to stay connected with you over the last 17 years and witness your kindness. You will always be one of my favorite teachers and I am so grateful for having experienced your friendship. You will be missed, until we meet again my dear friend.

    Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
    A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
    Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
    Or of thine friend’s were.
    Each man’s death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
    Therefore, send not to know

It tolls for thee. [John Donne]

  16. You can shed tears that he is gone,
Or you can smile because he lived,
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left.

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared,
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember him and only that he is gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on,
You can cry and close your mind be empty and turn your back,
Or you can do what he would want:

smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

  34. Dear Aung Family,

I wish to extend my and my family’s personal, and the LU college of engineering’s deepest condolences to the Aung family. Dr. Aung and I began our LU academic careers around the same time in 2001. Over that time, we became colleagues and friends, even though we were in different engineering departments. Ken was supremely dedicated to his students and colleagues, and I could always count on him to have a smile on his face. It was Ken’s dedication to his students, faculty and LU that led me to select him, with full agreement of his ME colleagues, as interim ME department chair. I will miss Ken, the college of engineering will miss Ken and the entire LU community has lost a great friend and colleague. He influenced many lives throughout his career.

    Rest in Peace, my friend.

  44. It is so painful to type here with my shaky hands, and I really could not have any right words to say. Dr. Aung, are you really gone ???

My life at Beaumont started with a phone call from Dr. Aung. For the past 14 years sitting next to his office we were so used to saying hello to each other everyday before we started our work. Dr. Aung had been my vital support. He helped me so much in both teaching and research, and I can always find an answer from him – He is extremely brilliant and knowledgeable. When time permitted we can chat hours on all the topics. We enjoy dinging together and taking the trip to see ducks. …

All of the beautiful time stops in such a sudden and heartbreaking way. I still cannot believe that it will never come back again. Rest in peace, Dr. Aung.

With my deepest condolences and sympathy, I pray for Dr. Aung’s family. May God help you find the strength and power during this difficult time.

  45. I have known Dr. Aung since he joined Lamar in 2001. At the time,Dr. Aung and I were in different departments but, because we received our Master’s degree from the same school and I had some collaborative work with ME faculty, we became acquainted. I started serving as the Department Chair of ME in2006 and worked very closely with Dr. Au g. I have never doubted that Dr. Aung was an exemplary faculty member – he cared about his students, he treated his students fairly and with respect, he helped his students in any way he could, and his teaching was personable and of the highest quality. In addition to teaching, Dr. Aung also involved in and held leadership roles in many Universtiy and professional programs such as undergraduate research, undergraduate curriculum,TSGC program, and ASME professional and student chapters. Being selected as a “Universtiy Professor “ and a two-time recipient of the”Distinguished Faculty Fellowship in Teaching “ award are true testament to his excellent career achievements.
Dr. Aung was not a very good colleague, but also a very warm person and a very good friend. We often had lunch together with Dr. Zhou and Dr. Li. I was always impressed with his knowledge and how he dealt with problems. In my 14 years as the ME Department Chair, I benefited from his ideals and his support many times when I face my own problems. Dr. Aung surely made my job much easier and Iam very grateful for everything he did.
It was a big shock when I learned last Wednesday morning that Ken passed away. I am having a hard time accepting the sad news even now. His wife lost a great husband, his sons lost a great father,ME lost a great Chairman, Lamar lost a great faculty member, we lost a great colleague and friend, and the whole world lost a great person.
My deepest condolences go to Ken’s family. He will stay in our hearts and we will remember him forever.

  62. Dear Dr. Aung’s family, Please accept my sincerest condolences on this great loss. I am shocked and saddened by this news. I have known Dr. Aung right from the day one at Lamar, as a student and then as a colleague and has been in touch for the past 20 years. He was on my doctoral thesis committee. We met a month ago and I was so glad to have seen a familiar face at Lamar and made plans of doing more service to Lamar. It is hard to believe that he is no more. Dr. Aung was a wise, kind-hearted and ever smiling person. He was such a pleasant person to be around and has impacted countless students positively at Lamar and beyond. People like Dr. Aung are very rare in existence and I feel saddened that we lost him. He will definitely live in our memories and thoughts. Our prayers are with Dr. Aung’s family.
