Calvin Coolidge Gholson

Calvin Coolidge Gholson passed away December 27, 2016. Mr. Gholson was born on a farm near Atlanta, TX on September 10, 1924 and was the youngest of six children.

He graduated from Kildare High School in 1941. He and one of his brothers hitchhiked to Houston the summer after Calvin graduated to find better job opportunities. A county sheriff took them in and let them stay at a boarding house that the sheriff and his wife ran. Calvin and his brother worked at a downtown box company until Calvin was recruited to become a welder at the Houston Shipyard. Calvin says “I fell in love with welding the very first time I saw the man run a bead!” He retired from Union Carbide where he was lead welder after 25 years of service.

His future wife, Sybil Neel, lived across the street from the boarding house. They married on November 8, 1942.  He knew that he would be drafted, so he enlisted in the Army Air Corp in July 1943 and he served his country during WWII until 1946.

He loved his family! Calvin and Sybil loved to travel and hang out with family. He loved nature, fishing, hiking, and watching football.

Calvin is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Sybil Gholson and his parents James and Sarah Gholson; sisters: Vera Loper, Hoyt Griffin and Floy Griffin; brothers: James M. Gholson Jr. and Neuman T. Gholson.
