Shawn Walker

In Loving Memory of Shawn Walker

Piper Shawn Walker, known to all as Shawn, passed away on June 28, 2026, in Pearland, Texas, after a brief illness from cancer. He was 68 years old. In his final days, Shawn was surrounded by the love of many friends and family members who came to see him, and loved ones were by his side when he entered the presence of his Lord and Savior.

Shawn was born on July 12, 1957, in Baytown, Texas, to Sandra and Richard Walker. He spent his childhood in Texarkana, Texas, and he was proud that the Walkers were one of the area’s founding families.

Shawn attended Texas High, played baseball as a child, was active in chess club, played drums in junior high and high school band, and began bowling in junior high. He spent treasured time with his grandparents, Rema and Laverne Byrom, who were like a second set of parents to him, making memories on their farm and traveling around the country antiquing with his grandfather. He also began working at a young age, maintaining a steady stream of jobs from bagging and stocking groceries at Piggly Wiggly in high school to night security work and working at The Framery with his brother through college.

His interest in performance continued into young adulthood. He was involved with the TC Players at Texarkana College, and between Texarkana College and Baylor, he toured with a rock band as a drummer. At Baylor, he enjoyed extracurricular theater, including performing in Beowulf, and was active in the Baylor Jaycees. He also enjoyed intramural flag football and was a member of the Jaycees’ intramural bowling team, which won the league championship at Baylor.

Shawn earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from Baylor University, where he met the love of his life, Barbara. Shawn and Barbara were married on August 11, 1984, and originally made their home in Marlin, Texas, and then Texarkana, Texas. They shared 41 years of marriage rooted in faith, family, and devotion. He later earned his Master of Business Administration from Texas A&M University–Texarkana.

Shawn built a long and respected career in global business, supply chain, sourcing, contract management, and category management. Over the years, he worked with companies including Marlin Mills, Alumax, Newcourt, Criterion Catalysts, Compaq, Baker Hughes, Halliburton, J.B. Poindexter, LyondellBasell, and Latham Pool. Those who worked with Shawn knew him as intelligent, skilled, resourceful, and direct. He had a gift and passion for understanding complex problems, negotiating difficult contracts, leading projects, and finding practical ways to increase efficiency and profits.

In 1992, Shawn and Barbara made the Greater Houston area their home, including Spring and the Energy Corridor, eventually settling in Pearland. Shawn was proud of his membership in the Westchester Citizen Patrol and the Pearland Police Auxiliary. Tall, larger-than-life, loyal, and stubborn in the best and most memorable ways, Shawn took pride in being the kind of man others could count on. He believed deeply in protecting and providing for his family and friends, and he carried that responsibility with seriousness and love.

Shawn was generous, loyal, strong-willed, and never short on a story. He loved to spin a story into an epic adventure and enjoyed the company of those who would sit back and listen to his stories. His family lovingly joked that he never let the truth get in the way of a good story, but those stories were part of his charm. His tales carried his humor, his confidence, his memories, and his unmistakable personality.

Shawn also had a generous spirit that showed up most clearly in the way he loved to gather people together. Holidays were especially meaningful to him, not only because of the occasion but because they gave him a reason to cook, grill, plan, and provide far more food than anyone could reasonably eat. He could get excited about a Christmas menu months in advance, sometimes calling during the summer just to talk through what he wanted to make. To Shawn, food was not just nourishment, it was a big way he showed his love and care for people.

Shawn was also deeply invested in the things that mattered to his family. When his children were younger, Shawn gave his time and energy to their activities, such as swim team, scouting, and school activities. He was a voracious reader with a particular love for military history and Texas history, and he could move through books at a remarkable pace. He also found community through online gaming, where his storytelling, humor, and personality reached people far beyond his immediate surroundings.

Above all, Shawn was a man of Christian faith. He and Barbara shared that faith, and it shaped their marriage, their home, and the way they understood both life and death. In Houston, they attended Tallowood Baptist Church, where they built lasting friendships. After settling in Pearland, they joined University Baptist Church, which became an important part of Shawn’s life and faith. There, he worshiped, formed friendships, and was connected to a community of believers who cared deeply for him. In his final illness, he faced death with the assurance that his life was held in God’s hands. He often said he was not afraid of death; his sorrow was in leaving behind those he loved so deeply. His hope was in Christ.

To his grandchildren, Shawn was affectionately known as “Bear,” a name made even more meaningful because it also was his father’s nickname. He loved his grandchildren dearly and took pride in the family that would carry his legacy forward.

Shawn is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Lynne Humphrey Walker; his daughter, Chelsea Elise Walker Hardy; his cherished grandchildren, Piper Lynn Hardy, Paxton James Hardy, Pierson Evan Hardy, and their father, Timothy Andrew Hardy; his son, Gordon Stewart Walker; his brother, Byrom Landes Walker and wife Sherry Lynn Vandiver Walker; his sister, Jo Shannon Walker Hines and husband Ronald Keith Hines; his mother-in-law, Carolyn Essary Humphrey; his sister-in-law Laura Beth Humphrey Donathan; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Caswell Walker, Jr., and Sandra Sue Byrom Walker.

Those who knew Shawn will remember his generosity, his loyalty, his stories, his faith, and his deep love for his family and friends. He was a protector and provider, a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose presence filled a room and whose absence will be felt at every gathering.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, 1:30 p.m. at University Baptist Church, 16106 Middlebrook Dr, Houston, TX. It will be preceded by a reception at the church from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
