Walter Joseph Manuel
Walter Joseph Manuel, born November 28, 1961, in Galveston, Texas, went to be with his Lord on April 7, 2026, after a courageous battle with health issues.
Walter was the second child of Maggie Manuel and the late Sonny Manuel. He is lovingly remembered by his life partner, his family, his friends, his beloved pets, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched through his kindness, generosity, and service to others.
Walter had a deep love for animals and a gentle spirit that extended to all living things—even making sure the squirrels in his mother’s yard were cared for. His compassion and warmth will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Proud to be a BOI (Born on Island), Walter returned to his native Galveston ten years ago to live his best life. He often said that placing his feet in the waters of the Gulf brought him home and grounded him. His generous spirit and commitment to helping others reflected his faith and his dedication to advocating for those in need.
Of all the holidays Walter enjoyed, Mardi Gras held a special place in his heart. Anyone who spent time with him during the season knew he went all out—from vibrant costumes to his lively, gregarious spirit. Walter delighted in entertaining others and bringing joy wherever he went. His enthusiasm and largerthanlife presence made every Mardi Gras celebration unforgettable.
Throughout his life, Walter faced numerous spiritual and physical challenges, always turning to his faith for guidance. After a dream in which the Lady of Guadalupe asked him to build a grotto in her honor, he and his partner, Dan, searched across the state for rocks, stones, and materials to bring that vision to life. They built the grotto at their home in Abilene and later lovingly relocated it to their residence in Galveston—a testament to their deep spiritual commitment and shared devotion.
In 2022, Walter fulfilled another calling inspired by the Lady of Guadalupe: a pilgrimage to Mexico City with his mother, Maggie, and his sister, Rebecca, to pray at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The journey held profound meaning for him and for those who shared it.
Walter was always an inspiration when it came to his faith. He lived it openly, shared it generously, and never hesitated to encourage those around him. His quiet strength and unwavering belief touched countless lives.
Regardless of how his day unfolded—whether filled with work or play—Walter always made time to call his mother, Maggie, each evening. He loved sharing the stories and small adventures that made up his day. Those daily calls will be deeply missed, but Maggie finds comfort in knowing that he still watches over her, just as faithfully as he once called her.
A dedicated Registered Nurse for more than 32 years, Walter was known for his compassionate care for senior citizens and his unwavering positive attitude. While his presence will be deeply missed, his loved ones find solace in knowing he is at peace, celebrating in heaven.
This is not a farewell, but a heartfelt promise to reunite again.
