Mavis Place Fields

Mavis Place Fields, 96, resident of Dickinson, Texas went to be with our Lord on April 4, 2026 surrounded by her loved ones in her home. She was born in Nottingham, England to parents Albert Place and Wilhelmina Newton Place on August 14, 1929.

She grew up during World War 2. She met the love of her life, Frankie Fields, unexpectedly during a baseball game between the American GIs and a local British team. He noticed her right away and discovered her love for chocolate. Knowing it was rationed during the war, he  brought her a box of Hershey chocolate bars and that simple gesture was a beginning of a lifelong love story.

Mavis boarded an ocean liner in April 1951 to travel to America alone and begin a life with the man she loved, a marriage that lasted 65 beautiful years. While as a wife of a career US Air Force serviceman, she worked as a bank teller in many parts of the country where they were stationed.

Mavis was preceded in death by her husband, Frankie Fields, her parents and three sisters.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, two daughters, Liz Palermo (Bobby Sam) and Kathy Rossacci (David); grandchildren, Amy Palermo Diehl (Chad), John Palermo, Jeremy Palermo (Jenna), Brad Rossacci (Skyler), Marybeth Palermo Cutler (Jake), Lisa Rossacci Radicioni (Wade); eight grandchildren, Hadley, Jax, Josslyn, Jett, Garrett, Jace, Cayden and Gage as well as extended family and friends.

In her honor, a visitation will be held Thursday, April 9, 2026 from 10:00 – 11:00am with a funeral service at 11:00am in the Crowder Funeral Home Chapel, Dickinson. Interment will follow immediately at Forest Park East Cemetery, Webster, Texas.

  1. Mavis, along with her loving husband Frankie raised two beautiful daughters that became our cousins by marriage and we have enjoyed many memorable moments with them both. We send our deepest condolences to Kathy and Elizabeth and their families. May God’s holy angels comfort you all and may the sweet soul of your loving mother rest in the arms of her Savior Jesus Christ in the heavenly realm. 🙏 Sending much love and hugs.

  4. I have so many fond memories of my aunt Mavis, my mums oldest sister. Many of them seem to involve food, particularly cream cakes! Mavis never found cream cakes in America to match the ones she had with us in the UK! When I think of how she left England to go, alone, to America to be with Frankie, I am in awe of her bravery. Also, when I think of the support she got, especially from her mum (the incredible Mama Place) it makes me realise just how incredible our family is. This wasn’t a time when international travel was common or you could just jump on a plane. Mavis truly inspired me to be brave and take risks in order to achieve your dreams. She was always cheery and bubbly, she ALWAYS had an opinion and told you exactly what she thought. Although we messaged often, we rarely spoke on the phone, but around 3 weeks ago she called me. I think she knew but that call was such a comfort to me. And in her final days I felt a strong connection to her, I felt her presence. I am not a religious person but I do believe she is with Frankie, her sisters and Mama and Grandpa sharing the love and looking over us all. I will miss you Mavis, thank you for being such a big part of my life, even though you lived so far away.

  5. Mavis was a feisty little doll! So easy to love! I will continue to eat Coffee Ice cream in her honor! I know she is excited to one day see Frankie when they both meet again! It will be just like that sweet love story of theirs when they first met.
But even better in Paradise!!! Godspeed, darling Mavis! You will be missed, but we share in your joy to finally get closer to your eternal reward!!
