Catherine Virginia Matejka

Catherine Virginia Matejka known by her family and friends as “Susie” passed from this life peacefully on March 17, 2024. During her final days, she was surrounded and supported by her loving family and caregivers in League City, Texas.

Susie was born on November 21, 1939, to proud parents Nick and Jeanette Cambiano. She was raised in Galveston County with her five brothers, and after graduating from Hitchcock High School, she met and married the love of her life Clarence Ray Matejka. They were married 39 years and resided in Hitchcock, Texas, behind El Sombrero where they had their daughter Diana Smith and their son Frankie Matejka. As a loving and caring mother, she enjoyed cooking, baking, various crafts, and tending to her flower garden with her beautiful azaleas.

Susie welcomed four grandchildren who grew up in love with her home cooking including her famous spaghetti, fried shrimp and macaroni and cheese, chicken fried steak, homemade french fries, okra omelets, chocolate and peach pies, and vanilla custard cake. She always enjoyed a good day shopping with her granddaughters and never missed her grandsons’ baseball games.

Later in life Susie moved to Santa Fe, Texas, where she was blessed with a great-grandson and continued to enjoy spending her days with family, dancing, shopping, going on cruises, baking, and decking out her house for the holidays.

Susie was a devout Catholic and worshiped as a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Church and was a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 5400. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and brothers Nick Cambiano and Richard Cambiano (Caroline). She is survived by her daughter, Diana Smith (Carroll Shane); son, Fankie Matejka (Shannon); grandchildren Jessica Smith, Steven Smith, Tanner Matejka (Megan), Kailey Matejka; great-grandchild Eli Matejka; brothers Robert Cambiano (Sue), Louis Cambiano (Grace), Joe Cambiano (Wilma); sister-in-law Beverly Cambiano; as well as many other family members and close friends and her dear dog Sadie.
