Carolyn Ann Sparkman Hammack

Carolyn Ann Sparkman Hammack, age 88, passed away on December 15th, 2022 in Clear Lake City, Texas. She was born on November 10th, 1934 in Pascagoula, Mississippi to William Taylor Sparkman Jr. and Florence Vivian Grant Sparkman. She grew up in her childhood home on Lafayette Avenue in Pascagoula and graduated from Pascagoula High School in 1952, where she was an active member of the marching band. Carolyn then pursued a career in banking after high school, starting at the bank in Pascagoula, then moving to Los Angeles, California then Houston, Texas where she met her husband Billy Elmo Hammack while they both worked for Tennessee Gas Company. They married on January 21, 1961 and raised their three children in their home in the Meyerland/Bellaire area of Houston where they lived until 2017. Carolyn was an active member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Bellaire, Texas and also long-time volunteer for the Gabriel Project. Billy (Bill) retired from Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in 1993 and Carolyn retired from Bank of America in 1997. During their retirement years they loved spending time with their children and grandchildren as well as traveling to visit the Hammack family farm, the Hammacks in New Mexico (Joyce and Taylor) and the Sparkman/Gray/Thompson families (W.T., Daisy Ed, Elma Ruth, Arlis, Florence, and Mitchell). Carolyn also loved taking fun trips with the “Goula Girls,” from high school (Harriet, Margie, Jean, Pat, Virginia, and Marilyn). In 2002 Carolyn had the honor of being admitted into the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Carolyn is survived by: her daughters Ann Aileen Hammack Johnson (John), Sandra Kay Hammack Boyle (John); son Stephen Taylor Hammack; sister Florence Vivian Sparkman Thompson; grandchildren, Lydia Dawn Boyle, William O’Shannon Boyle, Shelby Claire Johnson, Jennifer Alden Johnson, Taylor Kirk Hammack, Wilson (Mary Carolyn) Johnson; numerous family members and friends; the wonderful caretakers at Lightheart Memory Care, Hollydale; and the staff of Providence/Charter Hospice. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Billy Hammack.

A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on December 22, 2022 at Crowder Funeral Home, 111 E. Medical Center Blvd, Webster, TX., with visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in Carolyn’s memory may do so to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).

  1. My cousin Billy was so lucky to have had Carolyn as a sole mate. She was the best of the best. Know she will be missed dearly, we know she will be happy being with Billy again.💕💕🙏

  2. Carolyn was the sweetest lady- always had a warm smile on her face. She leaves a wonderful legacy through her kids and grandkids! We send condolences and love to the entire family. May all the wonderful memories give you peace over this sad period. She is certainly dancing in heaven today and with good company. Love you all!
