Mary Margaret ‘Peggy’ (Connor) Whitaker

Mary Margaret ‘Peggy’ (Connor) Whitaker, 96, of Santa Fe, TX passed away on February 20, 2024, at Season’s Personal Care Home in Hitchcock, TX. Born October 4, 1927, in Lonaconing, MD, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Elkins) Connor.

Peggy worked as a PE aide at Santa Fe Elementary School and was director of Childcare at First Baptist Church in Santa Fe for many years until she opened a day care in her home. She loved working with babies and toddlers and positively impacted the lives of many of them over the years. She never saw a baby she didn’t want to hold. Peggy was well known for her cooking expertise from the huge family holiday dinners to baking delicious pies or cakes for community events. She was always ready to play a “friendly” game of 42! Peggy always had a smile on her face, greeted everyone with open arms and never met a stranger. She was known to everyone as “Grandma”. To know her was to love her!

Mrs. Whitaker was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Louis Whitaker; sister, Verna (Connor) Bittinger; brother, Ronnie Connor; daughter, Karen (Jimmie) Unger; grandson, Scott (Laura) Martin; granddaughter, Julie Unger, Debra Carter, and great grandson, Hunter Butler (son of Cindy and John).   Mrs. Whitaker is survived by her daughters Kathy Martin of Santa Fe, Mary Ann Jones of Pearland, sons Mike Whitaker and Jay Whitaker of Santa Fe and her sister Jo Ann (Connor) Waddell of PA. She is also survived by her five grandchildren Jessica, Brent, Jimmy, Cindy, Jayson, Michelle and Amy; fourteen greatgrandchildren Madison, Kennedy, Taylor, Justin, Tyler, Laney, Garrett, Sydney, Kara, Ryan, Cole, Bret, Nathan and Carter and one great-great granddaughter, Josie.

In her honor there will be a visitation 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Monday, February 26, 2024, at Crowder Funeral Home, Dickinson. A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at Hayes Grace Memorial Park, Hitchcock, TX.

The family is very grateful for the care and love given to Peggy for the past 2 ½ years by the staff and residents at the Season’s Personal Care Home in Hitchcock. She loved everyone there and enjoyed being part of the family. They also thank Magnolia Hospice for the wonderful, compassionate care they provided during her final days.
