WELBY JACKSON REDWINE, JR.

WELBY JACKSON REDWINE, JR.Born October 21, 1942 in Gordon, Georgia; Died June 26, 2019 in League City, Texas. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and devoted wife of 57 years, Marie Hawthorne Redwine, his son Welby Jackson Redwine, III and wife, Kristin (of Santa Fe, Texas); his daughter Jan Redwine Williams, and husband Dan (of San Antonio, Texas); and his 6 grandchildren Kira Cassiano (and husband Frankie); Mason Redwine, Austin Redwine, Mandy Truelock, Cameron Redwine and Caroline Williams; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law John and Debbie Gregory (of Tampa, Florida), and beloved nieces, nephew, and many other loving relatives and friends in his home state of Georgia and here in Texas. He was preceded in death by his father, Welby Jackson Redwine, Sr., his mother Louise Delanie Redwine, and his sister Susan Ford. Welby graduated from Wilkinson County High School in 1960, obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Mercer University, and went on to earn his Masters in Math and Physics from Wake Forest University in 1966. His career spanned more than 40 years in the Space Flight industry, working for Lockheed Martin and United Space Alliance, where in 2006, he received NASA’s Distinguished Public Service Medal for his work as the Flight Payload Manager on numerous Shuttle, Soyuz and Progress flights, as well as the International Space Station.  This is the highest honor given by NASA to an individual who is not an employee of the government. Welby was a man of unwavering integrity and enormous affection, which he never hesitated to show his family and friends.  He adored his wife Marie and they worked together always to support their children and grandchildren in every aspect of their lives.  He loved hunting, gunsmithing, and spending time with his family – especially during annual family vacations to the Frio River.  “Gangi” as he was affectionately called by his grandchildren, was so extremely proud of each of them and their unique accomplishments.  He was equally proud of his son Welby J., who followed in his footsteps in the space and engineering fields working for Lockheed and Boeing; and his daughter Jan, who became a teacher and then went on to earn her Masters degree – now leading the library system of the Medina Valley Independent School District. To know Welby was to love and respect him, and he set a stellar example for his Children and grandchildren to follow.  He will be sorely missed by his family as they move forward with their lives, continuing to try and make him proud.

There will be Visitation on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at 1:00pm  at Crowder Funeral Home ,  1645 East Main Street, League City, Texas 77573.  Memorial Service Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at 1:30pm, 1645 East Main Street, League City, Texas 77573.

  11. Aunt Marie, Welby J and Jan,
Our thoughts and prayers have been with you all since we got the news of Uncle Welby’s passing! I can’t remember a time of seeing one of you without the other!
I don’t know another family that stayed as close as ours with such a distance over so many years. Uncle Welby was always “The Celebrity” in our family! This obituary describes him perfectly! I always thought, how could a man of his statute and his responsibilities be such a kind, down to earth fun-loving human being.
    God Less ya’ll!
