Teressa Juanita Christmas Ortiz

Teressa Juanita Christmas Ortiz, 87, resident of Dickinson, Texas passed from this life on February 20, 2026, in her home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in Elliott, South Carolina on November 23,1938 to parents Hayward Vaughn Christmas, Sr. and Lomie Leola Brown Christmas. She married the late Airman Joseph John Ortiz Sr. on June 16, 1958.

She was a devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Teacher, and lifelong Baptist. Some of her hobbies included bowling, quilt making, sewing, crocheting, and knitting. She was also an artist and a beautiful pianist.

Teressa took pride in being a homemaker and teacher for many decades. She was a strong advocate for education starting with her graduation from Bishopville High School, SC. Furthering her education she attended multiple educational institutions, to include Baptist Bible College, Angelo State University (Master’s in Education, Bachelor’s in Psychology), Francis Marion University, University of Texas-El Paso (second Master’s Degree in Special Education), and the University of Houston’s Doctoral Program. She went on to teach across Pee-Dee County in South Carolina, her home state. She spent most of her later career teaching in Galveston County, to include Alamo Elementary and Ball High School; she was certified to teach at all levels.

Her faith was founded on her favorite scripture, John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” She was a life-long member of the Fundamental Baptist Church which included missionary work in the States and the Philippines.

Survivors include her children: Joseph J. Ortiz Jr., Theressa D. Ortiz, David R. Ortiz (Carey), Philip V. Ortiz (Sara); Sister Pauline Wilkie; Grandchildren Rachel Ortiz, Robert Ortiz (Leanne), Joshua Ortiz (Amanda), Cierra Ortiz and Ross Ortiz; Step Grandchildren Isabel Almazan and Gustavo Almazan; Great-Grandchildren Waylon, Rosalie, Maia, Ayvian, Blu, Aubrey, Adelynn, and several step Great-Great-Grandchildren.

Teressa was proceeded in death by her Parents, beloved Husband, siblings Dorothy Powell, Leotis Anderson, Hayward Christmas Jr., and Patricia Christmas.

Teressa will forever be remembered as a provider of love, caring for all before herself with loyalty, strength, and wisdom embracing others through our heavenly Father’s arms.

Forever in our hearts an adored Teacher, Mother, Granny, Memaw, and Mother Goose.
