Thomas Preston Hackney III

Thomas Preston Hackney, III, of Kemah, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2026 in Webster, Texas at the age of 77. He was born on November 21, 1948 in Huntington, West Virginia.

Tom spent more than 20 years working for the railroad — a career he deeply loved and took great pride in.  Tom found freedom on the water.  Sailing was more than a hobby to him; it was a way of life.  He spent many years living aboard his boat, traveling across open waters and sailing around the globe.  The sea gave him peace, purpose, and endless stories to tell.  Tom also had a deep appreciation for firearms, both new and antique.  He enjoyed collecting pieces that carried craftsmanship, history, and character.  He was also known for enjoying the finer things in life, especially good food.  Tom loved memorable meals, fine dining, and sharing great food with others whenever he could.  Tom will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his strong passions, and the way he fully embraced the things he loved most.  He leaves behind memories of open oceans, passing trains, treasured collections, and countless conversations shared over exceptional meals.

He is preceded in death by parents Thomas Hackney Jr. and Eileen Spurlock.

He is Survived by wife Elva Zaldivar, Step son Alejandro Zaldivar, Step daughter Vanessa Zaldivar, Step son Luis Zaldivar, and his beloved cat Olivia.

A Memorial service will be held at Crowder Funeral Home – League City, 1645 East Main Street League City, TX 77573 on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at 3:30pm.
