Melva Elaine Long

Melva Elaine Long was born April 4, 1955 in Houston, Tx. Her family moved to Bacliff in 1957 where she grew up and made many lifelong friends.

Work was an integral part of her life that brought her much joy, many memories and a lot of pride in her achievements. She began her career at Stauffer Chemical along side her father and brother. She made a name for herself with her knowledge, skills and determination. She retired from Rohm and Haas/Dow in 2019. She was a first class welder and pipe fitter who helped pave the way for women in her field, gaining respect from all who worked with and learned from her. Her beautiful welds were second to none and are still holding and talked about to this day.

Elaine was a proud wife, mother and grandmother who always put her family first, even in front of herself. Her willingness to help others was felt by all and everyone she met was considered a friend.

She couldn’t dance or sing but loved listening to gospel and country music while she worked with her plants which she could grow with amazing success.

Elaine leaves a legacy of kindness, love and  a serving heart. She made the world a brighter place and impacted all who knew her. Her friends were family and she thought the best of everyone. She will be dearly missed by all!

  1. I’ve known Elaine since I was probably 6 years old. Her brother Garry was my friend and playmate. Elaine was older so she didn’t have much to do with me and Garry lol. I remember how pretty she was and thought how lucky Garry was to have a big sister. I remember her mom talking to my mom about how proud she was of her. Becoming a welder and raising Shayla. I always saw her as a strong woman. She will certainly be missed by many.

  2. She was my bestfriend for all 12 years of my life, she was like another mom for me and when she died I couldn’t believe it. I never thought the day would come where I couldn’t watch movies with her, and tell her all the drama going on in my life, it physically hurts to talk about her, and even writing this message hurts. But I know she has a special spot in heaven, where she is reunited with her husband and her brother and mom and dad. As much as I want her back, she’s at peace and out of this messed up world, and I know she’s happy.
