Marie Gay

Born April 15, 1920, she was always fond of saying two things always happen on April 15th my birthday and tax day. Born in League City, Texas to Sebastian and Domenica Ghirardi. Preceded in death are husband Carl and sons Roy and Don, brother Johnny Ghirardi and sister Annie Hatch. Survived by sister Dorothy Ludwig and spouse Bill. Grandchildren Don Jr. and wife Kimberly, Shane and wife Kate, Darren and wife Caitlyn, and Glen. Great Grandchildren Eli, Caleb, Jonah and Sophie. Marie and husband Carl started their career together in the early 40’s in the magazine business traveling the country with their crew of salespeople. After returning to the Dickinson area, Marie and Carl started Gay Pontiac on Hwy 3 in 1948. In the 60’s they moved the location to the newly built Gulf Freeway where their business flourished, receiving numerous awards for setting sales records over the last 68 years. Marie was one of the first female dealers recognized by General Motors. Car buyers enjoyed Marie’s welcoming greeting on the showroom floor and her dedication to making sure they had a great experience and she was always there if they needed her. She commanded the respect of her employees by being tough but also caring and approachable. The car business was her life and that meant her customers and employees. She was always selling cars, even into her last years she was selling to nurses and doctors in the hospital. Marie and Carl also operated Houston International Raceway on the Gulf Freeway in the 60’s and begin their lifelong passion for drag racing. They were part owners in Houston Raceway Park. Marie loved traveling the world with family and friends, especially Italy and Las Vegas. She and husband Carl loved the Oilers and were their biggest fan. A member of True Cross Catholic Church, in Dickinson and St Mary’s in League City. The Family will receive friends on Monday, March 14, 2016 from 5-7:00pm with a Vigil Ceremony at 7 o’clock at Crowder Funeral Home, 1645 East Main, League City, Texas 77573 with Deacon Andy DeYoung officiating. A Funeral Mass will follow on Tuesday at 10:00am at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1612 East Walker, League City, Texas 77573 with Father Howard Drabek officiating. Interment will take place at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Dickinson, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Building Fund or the American Diabetes Association.
