Marianne Ellen Gerek

Marianne Ellen Gerek was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She left this world on September 28, 2022 at age 83. She will be greatly missed.

Marianne was born to Michael and Helen Popovich on August 4, 1939 in Olyphant, PA. She spent her childhood growing up on the family Dairy Farm in Montdale, PA. Marianne was the oldest of 4 children, brother Ed (wife Mary), and her younger twin sisters Joan Smith (husband Chuck) and Judy Rutkowski (husband Chas). After graduation, she met her Husband Thomas Gerek. Once married, they moved around the country for Thomas’ work, taking them to Kansas, Virginia, Florida, New York, and ultimately ending up in League City, Texas.

She is preceded in death by her loving parents, her husband Thomas of 33 years, her brother Ed, her sister Judy, and her long time friend Jim Poindexter.

Together with her husband Thomas, Marianne was the mother of son Thomas M. Gerek (resides in Hillcrest, TX), son Richard S. Gerek & wife Donna (resides in League City, TX), and daughter Patricia A. Haden & husband Austin (residing in Fort Worth, TX). She is grandmother to Braxton T. Gerek (League City, TX) and Hayden R. Gerek (League City, TX).

After raising her three children, Marianne resumed her career for a number of years. When she retired from the insurance industry, she found her new work family at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Clear Lake, as the church secretary. She worked there for almost 20 years. When she wasn’t working, she enjoyed her grandchildren, watching them play sports over the years, watching numerous school plays, and just loved learning about their days. She was also a very accomplished piano player and loved to play at home. Another passion was traveling, especially when she could travel with her daughter and whenever the path led to see her sister Joan in South Carolina.

Marianne’s other passion included cooking for her family. She was the best! Excellent meals and excellent sweets! A favorite of ours was her German Chocolate Cake, and her Texas Sheet Cake, both were best ever!

A funeral service is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Thursday October 13, 2022 at St Mary of the Expectation Catholic Church, 1612 E Walker St, League City, TX. In Lieu of flowers, please donate to Texas Children’s Hospital or your favorite charity. Interment to immediately follow Mass, at Mt Olivet Catholic Cemetery, located 7801 Gulf Fwy., Dickinson, TX
