In Loving Memory of Kenneth Michael Hurd

Kenneth Michael Hurd, beloved father, grandfather, brother, veteran, and friend, peacefully departed this life on September 10, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on July 24, 1941, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Aquilla and Ralph L. Hurd, Sr., Kenneth—known affectionately as “Ken” to his many friends and family—lived a
life marked by service, faith, humility, and deep, abiding love.

Ken grew up in a close-knit Catholic household alongside his two brothers, Ralph Jr. and Edwin. The Hurd boys were raised with strong values and a foundation of faith, attending Catholic school at St. Monica Catholic Church in Tulsa. Ken later graduated from the historic Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1959, before pursuing higher education at the esteemed Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he completed two years of college.

Ken then answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. From 1962 to 1965, he proudly served during the Vietnam War, stationed primarily in Bangkok, Thailand. His time in the Air Force helped shape the calm strength and discipline that defined his character throughout life. In June of 1964, Ken married Anne McCuiston, and together they welcomed two children: Lori Anne, born on September 10, 1965, and Kenneth Michael II, born on September 6, 1972. Ken embraced fatherhood with joy, passing down his love for family, sense of duty, and easygoing spirit to his children. Some of their happiest family memories, were taking road trips across the country to spend time with loved ones during holidays and family reunions.

Ken’s professional journey was diverse and reflective of his many skills and interests. He worked as a pharmacy technician, among other roles, before spending 15 years as a building maintenance supervisor at The Williams Companies. His dedication, reliability, and work ethic earned him respect across the oil-and-gas industry and the broader Tulsa business community. Ken’s faith was always a constant in his life. A lifelong Catholic, he began his spiritual journey at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Tulsa and for the past 18 + years, was a devoted and hardworking member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Houston,
Texas. Whether in worship, service at the food pantry, or quiet prayer, Ken’s faith sustained him through life’s joys and challenges.

At the age of 50, Ken got a second chance at love when mutual friends introduced him to Jan S. Leftwich. What followed was a nearly 30-year love story marked by deep love and companionship, mutual respect, and joy. Together, they forged a life on their own terms—balancing her passion for travel with his love for the kitchen, while sharing a mutual love for sports, music, and spending time with friends and family. Life moved them to Houston in 2005 where they continued their active lives, full of new experiences and spending time with friends and family. Over the years, from weddings and grandchildren to illness and loss, Jan & Ken’s bond remained steadfast and inspiring to others. They genuinely loved to
be in each other’s presence and referred to other as “my almost perfect half.” Sadly, after 14 years in loving partnership, Jan was called home to Jesus in February 2019; and while Ken was never quite the same without her, he lived the last few years of his life on his own terms, unapologetically.

Ken was preceded in death by his loving spouse, Jan S. Leftwich Hurd, his parents Aquilla and Ralph L. Hurd, Sr., and his niece Desi McBee. Treasured family left to cherish his memory are his Loving Children: Lori Anne Brown (Billy) of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; Kenneth Michael Hurd II (Serelda) of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Monica Nicole Guillory (David) of Spring, Texas; Cherished Grandchildren: Kenneth Michael Hurd III (Tre′) and Kylie Mikaye Hurd of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Andrew David Guillory and Adrian Joseph Guillory (AJ) of Spring, Texas; Beloved Brothers: Ralph L. Hurd, Jr. (Wenona) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Edwin Hurd (Kathy) of Portland, Oregon; Adored Nieces and Nephews: Kevin L. Hurd of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Reginald L. Hurd (Danielle) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Aquilla Hurd (Jared) of Portland, Oregon, and Frances Hurd (JoAnna) of Kansas City, Missouri; as well as numerous cousins, grandnieces & nephews, extended family, play cousins, and friends.

A visitation will be held from 10:00-10:30 on Friday, October 3, 2025, at St. Monica Catholic Church, with the Rosary Service at 10:30-11:00am. The funeral mass will be at 11am with Father Martins Emeh officiating, followed by a repast in the fellowship hall. St. Monica Catholic Church is located at 8421 West Montgomery Road, Houston, TX, 77088.

The legacy of Ken Hurd is one of quiet strength, steady love, enduring faith, and boundless generosity. He lived with intention and grace, touched the lives of all who knew him, and left behind a family and community who will continue to be guided by his example.

I have fought to good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2Timothy 4:7-8
