Judith Mae Atkins

Judith Mae Atkins passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at HCA Clear Lake Regional Medical Center in Webster, Texas at the age of 74.

Judy was born on November 3, 1944 in Houston, Texas to Bob and Dorothy Hyzer. Judy earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Houston and taught mathematics for nearly 30 years at Pearland High School. Judy retired in 1999 but returned to the classroom for several years afterward because she was not done helping students succeed and learn.  When she was not teaching, Judy enjoyed traveling the world and taking cruises with family and friends.  She took great pride in spending time with and spoiling her three grandchildren.  She also enjoyed helping all students after retirement by tutoring them in mathematics for both college and high school courses.  After retirement, Judy worked with students who were not healthy enough to attend school daily — teaching them mathematics and other courses so that their education could continue.

Judy is survived by her loving husband James Kenneth Atkins, daughter Kathy Latham, son Bob Atkins, daughter-in-law Wendy Atkins, grandchildren Alex Latham, Landon Atkins, and Ella Atkins, and her dog Ebbe.  Judy is preceded in death by her parents Bob and Dorothy Hyzer.

A brief memorial service will be held at Crowder Funeral Home located at 1645 East Main Street in League City, Texas on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 2:00 pm.  Following the service, the family welcomes all to celebrate the life of Judy Atkins at a reception.   We will be sharing some of the many fun stories in memory of Judy, as she had plenty of adventures and made an impact on so many students, friends and colleagues throughout her life.  Food and drink will be provided, but feel free to bring your favorite dish or beverage, if you prefer.

In lieu of flowers, we are asking for donations in Judy’s name to the American Kidney Fund or ALSAC St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Both of these charities were very dear to Judy.

  3. Thank you dear Judy for sharing your knowledge with so many students in Pearland. You personally helped my daughter, Karoline, in math who was on “home bound”. Your math skills were amazing. We looked forward to your weekly visits and stories about your upcoming or past adventures. One day in particular comes to mind. You were telling Karoline and I that you were going skydiving! As I was walking you out, I told myself that you truly embraced life to the fullest and you wouldn’t be defined by any health issues. Judy, you led by example. Your zest for life was truly inspirational and I am certain you influenced everyone with whom crossed your path. I pray for comfort for your family and friends during this time of grief. We will miss you and I take solace in knowing that you are with are Jesus and our Heavenly Father.
