James “Jim” Evan Lewis, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, went to be with the Lord on September 10, 2026, surrounded by his family. Jim leaves behind a legacy of compassion, creativity, curiosity, and a lifelong dedication to teaching others.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 7, 1954, to Donald and Mary Lewis, Jim lived a quiet but fulfilling life. He believed there was something to learn from everyone and that connection with others was deeply important. His openness and compassion allowed him to connect with people from all walks of life, always taking the time to listen and understand.

Jim earned his degree in Education from Ohio State University and completed his master’s degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1992. He dedicated his life to education, serving as a teacher, assistant principal, and administrator. Education was never just a profession for Jim; it was a calling. He believed in giving children the opportunity to discover the world around them and dedicated himself to teaching them about all aspects of the world, from science and technology to nature and history.

Music was his first love. He found great joy in listening, writing, performing, and teaching music. He had a remarkable ear for music and could listen to a piece only a few times before sitting down at almost any instrument and playing it. He had a beautiful voice and shared it with his church, singing in the choir at Temple Baptist Church in Texas City for 30 years. His love of music also extended to his students, and he taught guitar after school to children who wanted to learn.

Above all, Jim loved Christ and his family. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather. Jim met his wife, Rebecca, in San Antonio, and together they built a life and family that spanned 42 years of marriage. He chose to make East Texas his home and came to love Texas so ardently that his love for it rivaled that of those who had been born and raised here.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Lewis; daughter, Sarah Lewis and grandson, Elliott Drummond; and son, Jonathan Lewis. James Lewis’ family expresses their deepest appreciation to all the friends and family who supported them over the last year.

There will be a memorial service held at Temple Baptist Church in Texas City on October 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
