Bonnie Hovde Melton

Bonnie Hovde Melton, of League City, passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 in Webster, Texas at the age of 77.

She was born on June 2, 1948 in St. James Minnesota to Amos and Arleen (Chalin) Hovde.  Bonnie grew up on the family farm in Hanska, Minnesota.  She graduated from St. James High School. Bonnie graduated from Mankato State University with a bachelor’s in education.  She taught in Guam for two years until making her way down to Houston, TX in 1974.

Bonnie was united in marriage to John Melton on June 16th, 1979 in LaSalle, Minnesota.  John and Bonnie met as new teachers at P.H. Greene Elementary in Friendswood, TX and started dating in 1978.  This union produced their one and only child, Emily Joelle Hovde Melton on October 28th, 1982.  Bonnie’s greatest joy were her two grandsons, Aidan and Austin.

Bonnie had a calling and passion for education.  She taught elementary education in Guam for 2 years, Houston ISD for 3 years and Clear Creek ISD for over 30 years. Bonnie continued her love for education by joining Texas Teachers of Tomorrow in 2005.  She successfully mentored 20,000 transitional teachers throughout the next 20 years.  She continued to mentor transitional teacher until her passing.

Bonnie was actively involved in many organizations: State and Local officer for Alpha Delta Kappa (Delta Beta Chapter), Officer for Clear Creek Association of Retired Teachers, Officer in Delta Kappa Gamma, President for Houston Assembly of Delphian Chapters, Beta Chi Chapter and Delphian Past Presidents Club.

Bonnie enjoyed traveling and playing bunko with friends.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Amos Hovde (father), Arleen Johnson (mother) and Arnold Johnson (step-dad).

Bonnie is survived by her loving husband of 46 years John Melton, best friend and only child, Emily Melton of Bondurant, IA, and her greatest joys grandsons Aidan (16) and Austin (14).  She is also survived by her brother Tom Hovde (Karen) of Alber Lea, MN, her nephews Tim Hovde (Resha) and Dan Hovde (Wendy) and great nephews.  She is also survived by her step brothers and sisters and their children.  Bonnie is also survived by her many friends including 4 special girlfriends LouAnn Hollis, Tina Vasquez, Cindy Roy and Fran Harding.

The Family will receive friends on Monday, August 11, 2025 from 1-3:00pm at Crowder Funeral Home, 1645 East Main St. League City, Texas 77573.Interment will take place at Albion Cemetery in Goodall, Minnesota under the direction of Strum Funeral Home, 906 10th Ave S, St James, MN 56081, (507) 375-7342.
