Margaret Carline Long

Margaret Carline Long was born at home on March 17, 1929, along with her twin sister Marjorie Earline to Carl and Rebecca Efrid in Galveston, Texas.

Margaret grew up in Galveston and attended Ball High School. After graduation, she married and was blessed with five children. Following her divorce, she moved to Texas City, where she devoted herself to raising her family. With no outside support, she worked tirelessly to provide a loving home and a better life for her children, instilling in them the values of resilience, determination, and compassion.

Margaret began her career at American National Insurance Company in Galveston as a typist. She later joined NASA, where she was part of the space missions team, transcribing astronauts’ verbal recordings into written documentation — a role she cherished. After marrying, she moved to Houston and began working in the proposal department at Brown & Root, Inc., producing documents for various major projects. Margaret eventually retired from Brown & Root, carrying with her many fond memories of her years there and the friendships she made along the way.

After retiring, Margaret and her sister, Marjorie spent many happy days together, enjoying each other’s company and sharing time with family. She loved sewing and created a special quilt for each of her grandchildren. She also lovingly made doll clothes and refurbished Cabbage Patch dolls, gifting them to her grandchildren and to young girls in her church. Margaret’s giving spirit touched everyone around her — if she bought herself a new outfit or trinket, she would often say, “I need to get Margie one, too.” She also faithfully supported St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for many years, reflecting her lifelong commitment to helping those in need.

When the time came for the twins to live apart with their respective children, Margaret embraced the change with grace. She moved to Holliday, Texas, to live with her eldest daughter, Carolyn, and her husband, Tommy. There, she became part of a warm and loving household and often expressed how grateful she was to share that time together.

Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, Carl & Rebecca Efird, brother Leland Efird and wife Nancy; sister Marjorie Lindberg and husband Julius; Sister in law Minnie Efird; and Great granddaughter Chloe Grace Wike. She leaves behind brother Carl Efird; Daughters – Carolyn Reed & husband Tommy; Marilyn Prewitt & husband Richard; Sons – Charles Jones; Joe Jones & wife Carol, Jerry Jones; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren.

On Saturday, September 13, 2025, Margaret’s family will greet friends from 10:30 am – 11:30 am followed by a Funeral Service 11:30 am at Crowder Funeral Home, 1645 E. Main Street, League City, Texas 77573.   281-337-1515. Interment will be at Forest Park East, Webster, TX.

  1. I was five years old when Margaret baby sat with me and my brothers for my Mother to leave the house for a few hours. That was a long, long time ago because Margaret was fifteen years old at that time.

I remember my cousin Margaret as being very quiet and I always admired her for working hard and taking care of her children.

Margaret is now with the rest of our family who have gone on before us. We will all miss her.

  4. Aunt Margaret was such a Special Aunt. One of a kind. We worked together at Brown & Root in Houston. I saw her often when I visited my parents. Knowing she is with her twin is a wonderful feeling. Will miss you, but will see you again in heaven. Love you Aunt Margaret. You did great! ❤️. Joyce Lindberg Campbell

  5. Margaret was the sweetest woman i’ve known. My mother in law for 18 years and a special person in all our lives and memories. i remember so many days we spent at the lake, the slide she purchased for the kids to slide into the lake, and so many other great weekends with her and Margie. She bought or made xmas presents throughout the year so she was ready for xmas and had gifts for all. She was a Godly person and kind and loving to all. She will be dearly missed.
