James (Jim) Philip Thompson
James (Jim) Philip Thompson, beloved dad, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2025, surrounded by family. Jim was born February 13, 1944, in Indiana Harbor, East Chicago, Indiana. Jim lived a life full of love, faith, dedication, and achievement.
Jim’s early years were spent in Whiting, Indiana where he graduated from Bishop Noll High School. He attended Holy Cross Seminary School before seeking higher education. Jim graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He went on to join the United States Army, earned a Master’s Degree, and served as a certified social worker assisting other service members and their families. Jim retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Jim went on to pursue his Doctor of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law. He practiced law in Houston, TX over the next 15 years. Jim returned to Whiting, IN, where he served as an Assistant District Attorney for Lake County, IN. Upon his retirement from practicing Law, Jim returned to Houston in 2006 to be near his children.
Jim was a devout Catholic, a member of the St. Luke the Evangelist community, and a life member of The Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, tinkering with things, and most of all reading. Jim was a consumer of knowledge. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his children; bi-weekly breakfast at City Café, Sunday drives, and all family gatherings. He instilled in his children a dedication to God, hard work, helping others, love, and compassion.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Annette Susanne (nee Baginski) Thompson, his father, Philip Robert Thompson, his former wife, Mary Louise (nee Goebel) Thompson, his brother, Philip Francis Thompson, and his sister, Kathleen Marie (nee Thompson) Drevyanko.
Jim is survived by his children, Lisa and Jason, three grandchildren, and his sister, Rita Henrietta (nee Thompson) Karpel.
Jim will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His faith endures in the lives he touched, and his hope shines on in the promise of eternity with Christ.
