Ruth Jeanette Mears Sullivan
The family of Ruth Jeanette Mears Sullivan mourns the loss of their beloved mother and grandmother on July 15, 2025. Ruth passed peacefully at home in Texas City, Texas, after recently celebrating her ninetieth birthday.
Ruth was born May 31, 1935, in Marianna, Florida, to parents Cecil Wilson Mears and Etta Mae Bailey Mears (both deceased). She was also predeceased by husband Dr. Robert E. Sullvan Jr., former husband Charles Raymond Golden, stepmother Laura Mae Blackmon Mears, brother Cecil Junior Mears and grandson Jazz Robertson Golden. Ruth was very close to her mother-in-law, Anna Golden (deceased), of Galveston.
Ruth is survived by her loving family – Stepbrothers Douglas Leon Mears and James Richard Mears; sons Robert Charles Golden and Thomas Wilson Golden with wife Melanie; stepdaughter Mary Kristine Sullivan Lopez; and stepsons Robert Emmett Sullivan III with wife Nancy, Mark Stephen Sullivan with wife Cheryl, David Randahl Sullivan with wife Mary; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would also like to recognize Ruth’s longtime friend and caregiver, Freda Bell of La Marque.
Ruth spent her youth and early adult years in Ft Lauderdale, Florida, where she graduated from Central High School in 1953. She then graduated from Jackson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing with a degree in nursing in 1956. She applied and received license as a Registered Nurse (RN). After moving to Texas in 1960, Ruth practiced as an RN at Clear Lake Hospital, Galveston County Memorial Hospital, Medical and Surgical Clinic of La Marque and various area nursing homes. She retired from nursing in 1994.
Ruth loved gardening, reading, antiques, cooking and family gatherings. She was a former
member of The American Nursing Association, Galveston County Medical Auxiliary, First United Methodist Church of La Marque and La Marque Crimestoppers. She was active in the Texas City La Marque Chamber of Commerce Golden Division.
