Dr. Larry Michael DeWitt was born in Alvin, TX on June 25, 1946. He was the second child, of James Oliver DeWitt and Letha Bernice DeWitt née Brown and grew up in Alvin with his older brother James Bart.  There, he received his primary schooling and began his journey on a life-long love of learning.  Larry attended Texas Western University (now the University of Texas at El Paso), played in international tennis tournaments representing his alma mater, and was active in student government while maintaining a high level of academics. In the summers he worked various jobs at places like Monsanto and the aptly named Rattle Snake Mound to earn money for his education.  After obtaining his undergraduate degree, Larry pursued his masters at Colorado State University and enjoyed exploring the area while a student there. He trained for the Peace Corps in New Mexico, where he climbed Pecos Baldy, learned various Olympic Sports, and made friends he would have for life.  He started his career in education at Webster Intermediate and taught students whose parents were astronauts at the height of the space program.

Larry’s teaching career then led him to Santa Fe High School where he met Linda Dues, his future wife.  After several proposals and finally a “yes” from Linda as they flew over the Grand Canyon, they married on July 9, 1977 at Shrine of the True Cross in Dickinson, TX and took a month long honeymoon to California that Larry spoke of often.  They moved to New Braunfels, TX in 1979 and that same year, welcomed their first child, Katie. Three and a half years later they welcomed their second child, Charlie and for the next twenty-four years Larry made the Hill Country his home, and gave his family a beautiful life.  He was an active member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, where he joined the Knights of Columbus, became grand knight for a time, and eventually a Fourth Degree Knight.  Larry loved New Braunfels, his church family, and friends he made in the community.  During the school year he taught in San Antonio, and during the summers he took his family on epic roadtrip adventures across America, traveling southwest to California, later across the Gulf Coast into Florida and up the East Coast into Canada, with several succeeding trips to Disney World, throughout the state of Texas, and into New Mexico and Colorado.

In 2001, after several years teaching full-time, attending classes part-time after work, spending summers going to school in College Station, being a full-time husband and full-time dad, Larry successfully completed his doctorate in educational administration, graduating from Texas A&M University at the same ceremony as his daughter.  Shortly after graduation, Larry and his family moved back to Alvin, and then to Friendswood, to help care for his mother. He was an assistant principal, tennis coach, and Spanish teacher throughout the next two decades, retiring in the mid 2010s, but continued to teach and coach in his retirement.  He celebrated the marriages of both his children to their wonderful spouses and welcomed his grandson with much love and joy.

Despite suffering a heart attack, a leg amputation, and a stroke in his later years, Larry’s drive for life was not diminished.  On May 24, 2025, after battling complications from a stroke, he passed peacefully to live in the company of the saints with our Heavenly Father. Larry will be missed by friends and family until they see him again, especially his wife Linda, son Charlie, daughter-in-law Priscilla, daughter Katie, son-in-law Jonathan, grandson Kolbe, brother James Bart, and his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In his honor, a visitation will be held Thursday, June 5, 2025 from 5:00-7:00pm with a rosary at 7:00pm in the Crowder Funeral Home Chapel, Dickinson, Texas.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated,  Friday, June 6, 2025 at 11:00am at  the Shrine of the True Cross Catholic Church, Dickinson, Texas. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Dickinson, Texas.
