John G. Wright Jr.

John G. Wright Jr.

August 14, 1941 – May 19, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John Wright Jr., who left us peacefully on May 19, 2025, in Clear Lake Shores, Texas, he died in the arms of his loving wife, Pege. He was 83 years old.

Known affectionately as Hoppimon, Grumpsy, and Sir Grumps-a-lot, John was a man of quiet strength, wicked humor, and sharp, dry wit. Born in Ada, Oklahoma, John built a life defined by integrity, service, and laughter. While earning his engineering degree from the University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1966, John also undertook the demanding training to become a Green Beret, before going on to begin a distinguished career with Exxon, where he remained until his retirement in 2002. He was also an Eagle Scout, a proud 32nd Degree Mason, Shriner and an Elk, embodying a life of service, brotherhood, and charity through his involvement with these organizations.

John’s life was rich in purpose and personality. He was a dedicated member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and found joy and camaraderie as he served as a member and officer of the Galveston Bay Parrot Head Club. Whether serving his country, solving engineering problems, or enjoying a stogie with friends, he lived with quiet resolve and an unmistakable twinkle in his eye.

He is survived by the love of his life, Pege Wright; his daughters, Michelle Umfleet and Beth Peacock (husband, Mark); his beloved grandchildren, Sam Brusnighan, Madison Middleton (husband, Jerry), Carly Belvin (husband, Nathan), Tanner Brusnighan, PJ Wright, and Jake Wright (wife, Sara), Bailey Peacock; and many cherished great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Mable Wright, and his brother, David Wright.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at T-Bone Tom’s on Saturday, June 7th, beginning at 12 p.m. Friends and family are invited to join in sharing stories, laughter, and love in honor of a man who gave us all so much. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, loyalty, and the kind of laughter that lingers long after the joke.
