Iris Evelyn Alessi
Iris Evelyn Alessi went to her eternal home on Sunday, July 6, 2025. Iris was a lifelong Lutheran, baptized as an infant in Yorktown, Texas. From birth on August 6, 1940, she lived on the family farm and had to take on duties at a young age after the untimely early passing of her father. She began her education in a Yorktown two-room schoolhouse, but moved to Hitchcock to finish elementary. She was a Hitchcock High School basketball player and 1958 graduate. Still a teen, Iris married Louis E Alessi Jr on June 7, 1958. After her children began school, she worked as a clerk for the Justice of the Peace at the Galveston County Courthouse.
Iris was very close with family, playing host to various extended and immediate family events. Her doors were always open with delicious homemade family recipes. She was the cornerstone and foundation of our family. She was always a steadfast hand and showed bravery in moments of difficulty, willing to offer words of wisdom and her favorite Bible verses when reassuring anyone needing it. Part of the Silent Generation that enjoyed a boom post-WWII, she traveled the entire 48 states continental US with her husband Louis as she loved camping. She was an adventurer and never turned down the opportunity to experience new places. She was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church, Texas City, where she served as church secretary and on altar guild. She more recently volunteered counting offering and with Lutheran Braille Workers. One of her favorite memories was participating in Peace Lutheran’s Journey to Bethlehem with her grandchildren, where she did her own basket-weaving. In her later years, she worked hard to make her garden beautiful and plentiful.
She was preceded in death by her husband Louis E Alessi Jr, her parents Henry August and Adeline Dieringer Wulf, and her brothers Leslie Wulf and Henry Wulf.
She will be greatly missed by her survivors: sons Jeffery Alessi and wife Judy, Michael Alessi and wife Paula; grandchildren Stephen Alessi, Faith Alessi, Dustin Alessi and Kristen Cantwell; great-grandchildren Evelyn “Evie” Mitchell, Jack Cantwell and Annabella Alessi; her sister Shirley Vanzant and sister-in-law Ruby Wulf; and many nieces & nephews.
In her honor, there will be a visitation on July 11, 2025 from 9:00am to 10:00am at Peace Lutheran Church in Texas City. A funeral service will follow at 10:00am. Interment will be at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas.
Serving as pallbearers are Stephen Alessi, Nic Cantwell, Dustin Alessi, Jay Stallings, Ronnie Wulf and Gale Robertson.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her name be made to Peace Lutheran Church in Texas City at www.peacetexascity.org
