Stephen Lynn Byrd

Stephen Lynn Byrd, age 70, of Texas City, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2025. He was born on June 7, 1955, in Sumter, South Carolina, to Barbara and Floyd Byrd. Stephen was a proud Boy Scout and earned the rank of Eagle Scout, a reflection of the values of service and leadership that guided his life. He was a 1973 graduate of Benton High School in Arkansas. After graduation, he served his country in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged after four years of active service and two years in the reserves. Following his military career, Stephen worked in the oil field during the early 1980s before deciding to pursue a new calling in law enforcement. He began his career with the Texas City Police Department in 1988. Over the course of 33 years of dedicated service, Stephen served his community as a patrolman, D.A.R.E. officer, and training coordinator before retiring. His commitment to protecting and educating others left a lasting impact on both his colleagues and the community he served. Stephen could be found most days in his garage, cigar in hand, working on a project. He was an excellent craftsman and woodworker. If he wasn’t in the garage, Stephen was more than likely at the deer lease, as hunting was a hobby he enjoyed for most of his life. Stephen was preceded in death by his parents, Barbara and Floyd Byrd, and his stepmother, Carolyn Byrd. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Clarice Byrd; his daughter, Stephanie Lyssy, and her husband, Garrett; two cherished grandchildren, Jaxson Hagewood and Avery Lyssy; as well as numerous family members and friends who will miss him deeply. A visitation will be held at James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque, with Pastor Stephanie Hughes officiating. Interment will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock, Texas. Pallbearers will be Jaxson Hagewood, Garrett Lyssy, Mark Cook, Kyle Cook, Bubba Robinson, Chase Robinson, and Zachary Robinson.
