John Davis Longnecker

John Davis Longnecker, Sr., 79 passed away unexpectedly on March 16, 2024, at his Heights area home. He had resided on the North side of Houston for over 40 years.

Johnny grew up living on Burnet Bay in Baytown, Texas. He and his friends could often be found on Burnet Bay on Sonny’s canoe. He played the piano, saxophone and guitar. He and some of his high school friends performed in small venues around Baytown with Johnny playing his treasured 1962 Fender Bass.

Johnny was a proud Robert E. Lee High School “Class of ‘62” graduate. After high school, he briefly attended the University of Houston before leaving school to start a family.

Johnny was “Jack of all Trades.”  He ran a delivery route for Sunbeam Bread. He worked for a mortgage company for 10 years before accepting a position as Vice-President of the mortgage department for the Alaska National Bank of the North in Anchorage, Alaska. He and his family only stayed in Alaska for one year, but the state made an impression on John and his sons. The boys still speak about their adventures in Anchorage including the 3 weeks that it took them to drive home on the ALCAN Highway.

Johnny started and owned several businesses over the years including insurance sales and a vending/coffee service. Johnny’s final job was with C & D Hardware in the Heights. He considered this to be his dream job. He started out as a customer and quickly fell in love with the store and its employees. The employees kept an eye on Pop and the family is grateful for all the support they have shown them throughout.

Johnny loved camping and being outdoors where he could sit around a campfire and have a beer or three. At least once a month, he would load the kids into the bed of his truck that he had outfitted with a homemade camper that leaked at every joint, Garner State Park was usually their destination.

Johnny always wanted a Triumph Bonneville. He finally got it. He was so proud of that bike. He joined the BMOA Motorcycle Club and would join them on various runs. The Nun Run was his favorite. He got a kick out of seeing a nun on the back of a bike or in a sidecar. He and his club would travel around and meet at various locations. John would always try to be there.

Johnny’s grandchildren taught him how to use “The Facebook.”  If you were friends with him on “The Facebook,” you knew when he liked something because he would share it with everyone. He told the worst “Dad jokes.” Pop will be remembered for his love of his family, his vast knowledge of so many subjects, his sarcasm, his love for the beach, his love/hate relationship with his phone that did everything but be just a phone.

John Davis Longnecker was born on July 13, 1944, in Houston, Texas to Nelson Davis and Elizabeth (Libby) Walters Longnecker, both preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death was his older brother Nelson “Sonny” Longnecker of Plaquemine, Louisiana.

John is survived by his sons, John Davis Longnecker Jr. and his wife Collette of Brenham, Texas. Devery Mooneyham and his wife Katte of Dickinson, Texas. His daughter Christina “Christi” Courson of Venus, Texas, eleven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, nephews and nieces and their families, his lifelong friend Kent Carew, and a host of remarkably close friends. A private celebration of life will be held on May 4th in Brenham for the family.

  2. Johnny and I played together in elementary school since I lived on Burnet’s Bay and he would show up on our big rocks from his canoe. We spent many hours walking along the bay shore, screwing with the sand crabs, making neat “pics” in the polluted water with the crap from the refinery!

Our mothers helped all of us celebrate our birthdays together between the two sections of our classes throughout our elementary school careers.

    Rest in Peace, dear friend!
